Alien Isolation

June 2017 PS Plus Free Games Predictions

We won't know for sure until the end of the month.

THE BIGGER GAME

Resident Evil 7

May 2017 had some great free titles for PS Plus members to enjoy, including the whole first season of the hilarious Tales from the Borderlands from Telltale, and the beautiful Abzu with music by Grammy-nominated composer Austin Wintory.

Usually each month, one larger game is the headliner for the free PS Plus game releases, and we predict June will feature horror survival title Alien: Isolation as that title.

First released in October 2014, these days Alien: Isolation is constantly swinging back and forth between discounted prices often dropping below $15 USD. The game follows Ellen Ripley’s daughter Amanda, 15 years after the events in the original Alien film. Currently, the season pass for Alien: Isolation is also discounted on the PlayStation store for $11.99 until May 24, offering all five add-on packs normally priced at $7.99 each.

The choice of including Alien: Isolation would also seem timely with the latest film Alien: Covenant hitting theatres this month. Since the lore of the games coexists with that of the movies, it would seem business-savvy for Sony to partner up with Fox for some cross promotion while still staying within the franchise. Even if Alien: Isolation doesn’t make it on the PS Plus list for June, it is still a likely candidate for the coming months.

INDIES

unravel, Salt and Sanctuary, PS plus, June 2017

Unravel and Salt and Sanctuary make up our indie picks for the month of June, as they are both polished and well-rounded titles that have been released long enough to be valid contenders.

Salt and Sanctuary from Ska Studios is a 2D action RPG that is often compared to the Dark Souls series for its tone and gameplay. It was released in March 2016 to critical praise, and would be a great addition to the PS Plus list for June for those who never picked it up since last spring. Not only was it one of six games released during the PlayStation Store Launch Party last year, but it is also a cross-buy title for Vita/PS4 so Sony could please both its handheld and console audiences in one go.

Unravel is another polished indie that could be free next month, and it’s honestly a surprise it still hasn’t made its way to a PS Plus lineup so far. This artsy platformer from EA released in February 2016, where you control a little red character named Yarny as you figure out environmental puzzles and unlock memories revolving around an elderly homeowner. It is very much a type of game Sony usually returns to for its PS Plus games lists due to the easy to grasp gameplay and shorter storyline.

VR GAMES

The Brookhaven Experiment, dick wilde, VR, aim gun, June 2017, PS Plus

Thus far, the promotion of PlayStation’s new Aim Gun controller for PSVR has been extremely underwhelming. The controller is releasing alongside anticipated PSVR title Farpoint on May 16, and can be purchased in a bundle with the game as well. Even though the controller will add another layer of immersion for the FPS genre in VR, there isn’t much incentive to purchase it yet since only one larger title has compatibility.

It would be a smart move by Sony to make the PS Plus VR games for June include two that are receiving Aim Gun controller support in order to entice PSVR users into trying out the new gun for something other than just Farpoint.

Two games receiving Aim Gun support are shooter Dick Wilde, which is also releasing on May 16 and is already available on Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, and Wave-based fighter The Brookhaven Experiment that released alongside PSVR on Oct. 13. If players felt they had a few more games to use their new controller on right off the bat, then maybe they would be more likely to pickup a Farpoint/Aim Gun bundle and try it out.
