January 2017 Xbox One Video Game Releases
Acorn Assault: Rodent Revolution (January 11th, 2017)
Acorn Assault: Rodent Revolution is just as wacky as its name makes it out to be. Having successfully released on PC earlier this year, it’s finally making its way to the Xbox One as the first title in 2017. Players will raise an army, overthrow a tyrant King, and save the oppressed squirrels in this RTS’s single-player campaign. You’ll have to utilize a variety of different strategies if you want to be successful across the game’s 25 levels.
However, the fun doesn’t stop when you’ve completed the game’s single-player campaign, with a multiplayer mode you can test your mettle against other players online.
Rise & Shine (January 13th, 2017)
Rise & Shine is the story of a young boy called Rise, and a legendary gun called Shine. Together, they must save the world of Gamearth from warmongering space grunts of Nexgen. Rise & Shine’s gameplay is a blend of arcade shooter, bullet hell, and puzzle platformer. Players will have to navigate beautifully stylized levels as they use Shine’s different bullet types to access hard to reach areas and defeat enemies.
However, don’t let the cartoony graphics fool you. Rise & Shine is tough as nails and it doesn’t use the term bulletstorm lightly. You’ll be dodging and weaving your way through an onslaught of incoming projectiles, and defeating some huge bosses in the process. Rise & Shine is due to release on Xbox One and PC on Jan. 13.

Pit People (January 13th, 2017 – Early Access)
Though it isn’t releasing as a full video game just yet, players will be able to check out Pit People for themselves in January thanks to its early access phase. Pit People is a fast-paced, turn-based co-op adventure and strategy title that blends exploration with challenging grid-based battles.
Players will have to use the full cast of unique heroes to rise from the Pit, discover their destiny, and make their way across an apocalyptic land. Be warned, though, there are plenty of enemies just waiting to hinder your progress, including robots, vampires, and cupcake people. Yes, you read that last one correctly.
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (January 24th, 2017)
Set in modern day American, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard sees the series return to its roots while also adopting a new first-person perspective.
Taking place after the events of the mediocre Resident Evil 6, the video game’s story unravels in Louisiana. Players assume control of Ethan Winters, a civilian inexperienced in combat who is searching for his missing wife. Unfortunately, Ethan finds himself in a derelict plantation mansion where there are plenty of horrors in wait.
Capcom has made quite a big deal about Resident Evil 7 returning to the roots of the series and survival horror as a whole, with exploration and tense atmosphere lying at the heart of the experience. However, fans can expect it to feel more immersive than ever thanks to the first-person view and some other gameplay enhancements not yet detailed.

Hitman: The Complete First Season (January 31st, 2017)
Throughout the course of 2016, IO Interactive has released all six episodes of the new Hitman’s first season. Following series protagonist Agent 47, Hitman: The Complete First Season will see players exploring a number of different locations around the world as they are tasked with taking out numerous high-profile targets. Taking them down will require you to scout out your surroundings and the assassination options they offer before executing your plan.
On top of each of the high-profile targets spread across locations such as Paris, Marrakesh, and Bangkok, there are elusive targets to seek out and eliminate, and players can also create their own hits and compete with other players in Contracts mode. The Complete First Season has a butt-load of content to keep you occupied during the quiet start of 2017, and is well worth a play if you’re a fan of the series.
Constructor HD (January 31st, 2017)
With a fresh coat of paint to make it feel all shiny and new, Constructor HD is the remaster of the original Constructor from 18 years ago. For those unaware, players assume the role of a property tycoon who must beat their rivals and create a successful and thriving city. While this will obviously require you to build homes and commercial enterprises quickly, you’ll also need to manage and negotiate with the Undesirables.
The Undesirables is the general name for a bunch of different NPCs that can either help or hinder your progress to construction success. Your rivals may use them against you to terrorize your neighborhoods, squat in your buildings, or tinker with your gas supplies. But everything they can do to you, you can do right back to them. Alternatively, you can play clean and hope your rivals won’t be the ones to step out of line first… but where’s the fun in that?

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Mega Battle (January 2017 TBA)
Just a day after fans got their first look at the upcoming movie, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Mega Battle was announced with a January 2017 release date. Players will fight their way through a number of levels, with dialogue, cutscenes, and enemies all been pulled from the first two seasons of the TV show.
Of course, with this being a beat ’em up, players will be able to level up their characters and unlock badass new abilities to help them fight the forces of evil. Combos can be pulled off by combining a variety of light, heavy, and projectile attacks and even better, the game has a four-player co-op mode, too. Unfortunately, this video game doesn’t have a set release date for Xbox One just yet, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated as and when a date is finally nailed down.
Abzu (January 2017 TBA)
Prior to its release on the PS4 earlier this year, Abzu was deemed the spiritual successor to the critically-acclaimed indie darling, Journey. While Abzu didn’t quite deliver on the same scale, it was an enjoyable adventure deep underwater all the same. Finally, Abzu is making its way to the Xbox One sometime in January.
Players assume the role of a deep-sea diver all on their lonesome as they explore some strange goings on deep below the surface. Abzu is one of those titles that is better experienced than read about, and so we’ll leave it there. If you do want to find out more about the video game, though, you can check out our review here.
