The process is quite simple if you know where to look. All you have to do, once the update has been installed, is load up your current saved game, and hit the Start button. Once you’ve essentially paused the game, enter the Settings menu and go to Gameplay. Here, you’ll find an option called ‘Difficulty’. Simply scroll right through the options here and you should see Fallout 4’s new Survival difficulty option. Select this and back out of the menus in order to start Survival Mode.

You can check out exactly what Survival does by checking out the “Survival” entry in Help in the pause menu. However, if you want to know what to expect we’ll give you a quick rundown.

The new difficulty mode will challenge players with a more realistic simulation of living in a post-apocalyptic world. Resources will now become harder to find, damage from attacks will be much greater, and you can wave goodbye to fast traveling, too. You’ll have to be careful every time you venture out into the wasteland, as you’ll only be able to save when you sleep, too. There’s much more to the mode, but you can get all of the details in the Help menu in the game.
