Austin Wintory the Grammy-nominated composer of Journey, will be scoring the soundtrack for Assassin’s Creed Syndicate Ubisoft announced today. In a post on the Ubiblog, the company announced the news along with a short interview with the composer himself. In 2012, the indie game Journey developed by Thatgamecompany became the first video game in history to have a score  nominated for a Grammy . Wintory of course is best known for his work on Journey, although he’s also lent his talents to other games including The Banner Saga and Abzu.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is set in 1868 London, during the Industrial Revolution. The new protagonists of the game are twin assassins Jacob Frye and his sister Evie Frye as they recruit London gangs to try and fight for justice with the oppressed working class of the city. Wintory attributes these two new Assassins as some of his main inspirations for the score, “With regard to the twins, they have this wonderful confidence, almost arrogance – particularly Jacob. Their mannerisms were a very crucial insight for the music, because it gave us permission to approach the score with a bit of fun and even sarcasm.” Wintory said.

The interview covers a lot of ground with Wintory, including his approach to composing game scores, what themes he wants to convey with the Syndicate score, and even how game music has changed over the last decade. Wintory even mentions if he had the choice of weapon as an Assassin, he’d choose a conductor’s baton dagger. We can all probably agree that an Assassin’s Creed musical should be in store after this, right?

The series certainly has a lot going on right now with Syndicate, two more games in the Chronicles series, and a movie coming in 2016. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate will drop on October 23, 2015. Recently we saw the first glimpse of Michael Fassbender as an Assassin in the movie set to release next year. We’ve also had a look at the different dynamics between the two playable characters, Jacob and Evie. What do you think about Wintory composing the score for the new game?
