Unstoppable
Jason Voorhees has finally been let loose on his fellow kombatants in Mortal Kombat X. Of course having a pretty much unkillable, mass murdering, mommy-issues having psychopath isn’t exactly fair, nor is he exactly “mortal”. But the good folks at Netherrealm thought it would be a grand idea to put Jason up against some of the franchise’s top fighters in a battle to the death. Kicking off his three variations is Unstoppable. This makes Jason a true nightmare, and perfectly captures the foe who many have come to fear from the Friday the 13th series of films.
Unstoppable provides Jason with damage and healing buffs, as well as the ability to come back from the dead (yeah, you read that right). Punishment gives Jason a temporary damage buff, allowing him to deal out massive amounts of hurt in a short period of time. Rampant provides the same buff only with a much quicker animation, making it harder for opponents to interrupt this special, but it comes at the cost of a third of your special meter. Rise, on the other hand allows Jason to heal slowly over time. When mixed with his uncanny ability, and unexpected speed, both buffs allow Jason to remain on the aggressive with ease. If things get a bit too hairy, and Jason happens to be defeated, Resurrection brings Jason back from the dead with a life bar that is filled based on the amount of Super Meter he had remaining at the time of death.
This variation is perfect for those who like to play a little recklessly. What Jason lacks in special abilities and attacks while using the Unstoppable variation, he more than makes up for with his ability to stay in the fight longer than most.
Punishment: Down, Down, X
Rampant: Down, Down, X + R2
Rise: Down, Down, Circle
Corpse Walk Down, Down, Circle + R2
Resurrection: Triggers when Jason dies
Slasher
Jason’s second variation, Slasher, ups the ante by providing this hulking beast with his signature machete. Utilizing both his speed and his strength, Slasher increases the range of all of Jason’s attacks by using said machete as an extension of his arm. It also provides him with a ranged attack, making Jason a much more difficult foe to overcome. Normally distance from Jason is the best course of action when faced against him, but in his Slasher variation that won’t really help. If you happen to be playing as him though, then this particular variation allows for you to control the fight from any range. Throw your machete for a sizable amount of damage at a distant enemy, or close the gap using Shoulder Push (or Shoulder Charge) which sends Jason dashing a considerable distance before dealing a knockdown blow to his opponent.
Unlike Unstoppable, Slasher lacks damage and healing buffs, and death is most certainly a finality when fighting in this variation. But, Jason isn’t completely without a trusty ace up his bloody sleeves. Killing Machine grants Jason some seriously tough armor in exchange for his ability to jump. But who looks at Jason and thinks of him as a jumper anyway?
Shoulder Push: Back, Forward, X
Shoulder charge: Back, Forward, X + R2
Bloodshed: Down, Forward, Square
Bloodlust: Down, Forward, Square + R2
Machete Toss: Down, Back, Triangle
Machete Throw: Down, Back, Triangle + R2
Psycho Slash: Back, Forward, Triangle
Hack ‘n’ Slash: Back, Forward, Triangle + R2
Killing Machine: Down, Down, Circle
Relentless
Jason’s Relentless variation finally unravels the mystery of how he is always able to catch up to those running victims. Jason always seems to move at a snail’s pace, never giving into the running and yelling of his horror movie colleagues. Yet, he always manages to be right behind the next to die at the most opportune moments. It turns out he has the ability to teleport, and really mess with their sense of direction. Relentless grants Jason the ability to pursue his opponent no matter where they go in the stage.
Pursuit and Dark Pursuit has Jason issue a threat that temporarily prevents his opponent from running and/or dashing. It also reverses their controls making it extremely useful against human kombatants, although not much so against AI. Using Lake Mist places Jason right behind his opponent. It doesn’t have the quickest animation so it’s best to use against those under the influence of Dark Pursuit, in the middle of an attack, or who happen to be stunned for one reason or another. Blood Mist does the same thing, though slightly quicker.
Of course, just being able to constantly be beside his opponent isn’t all that makes Jason’s Relentless variation so potent. Like Unstoppable, this variation also has a passive ability. Damned increases Jason’s damage output as his health decreases, making him perfect for newcomers, or those who like to play extra aggressive. On higher difficulties, Damned really comes in handy during those clutch moments in really close fights.
Pursuit: Down, Down, X
Dark Pursuit: Down, Down, X + R2
Lake Mist: Down, Back, Triangle
Blood Mist: Down, Back, Triangle + R2
Damned: Triggers as Jason’s health depletes.
X-Ray and Finishers
Fatalities
- Kill For Mother: (Mid-range) Down, Forward, Down, Forward, Triangle
- Sleeping Bag Killer: (Mid-range) Down, Back, Forward, Circle + R2
Brutalities
- Blunt Trauma: Back, Forward, X + R2 (win both rounds, then use this move for final hit)
- Go to Hell: L2 + R2 (do not trigger from close range)
- Blood Bath [Slasher Only]: Down, Forward, Square + R2 (hold Up during final hit)
- Head Spin [Relentless Only]: Down, Back, Forward, Triangle + R2 (must have Pursuit active during this final attack)
- Spinal Tap [Unstoppable Only]: Down, Back, Forward, Square (can only be done after being Resurrected in the final round)
X-Ray (L2+R2 with full meter)
The Horror: Jason’s X-Ray attack has him reach out his arm and take 4 steps towards his enemy. It is a mid attack that can be blocked by a standing opponent or ducked under, making it one of the harder X-Rays to pull off. Since he takes steps as part of the initial attack, The Horror gives Jason multiple opportunities to connect. It can also be triggered directly in front of unsuspecting opponents for a Brutality, which is probably the better option since Jason walks pretty slowly in this attack animation, making it very easy to read.
