Mortal Kombat X has just been released to a great response from both gamers and critics alike. Fans everywhere have been having a blast as they deliver gruesome injuries and fatalities upon their opponents.
Now, the Mortal Kombat games have never been known for taking on serious issues in gaming and lets be honest, with the over the top violence and larger than life characters, no one’s ever considered the franchise to be the one to be at the forefront when it comes to tackling important social issues.
However, observant gamers have discovered that Mortal Kombat X features the first openly gay character in the franchise’s history. In Chapter 4, one of the cutscenes strongly implies that the character Kung Jin is gay.
Kung Jin: “I can’t… they won’t accept.”
Raiden: “They care only of what is in your heart, not whom your heart desires.”

Pretty cool, eh? It’s great to see that video games of all genres are unafraid to be progressive. Many fans will also appreciate the fact that Kung Jin isn’t defined by his sexuality and is every bit as capable of kicking ass as all the other characters.
NetherRealm’s Cinematic Director for Mortal Kombat X, Dominic Cianciolo confirmed Jin’s sexual orientation on Twitter:
@bcharred I see people are picking up on the subtle exposition contained in Kung Jin's flashback. Glad we have observant fans!
