Does Tales of the Jedi Adapt E. K. Johnston’s Ahsoka Novel?

Tales of the Jedi introduces a few differences to Ahsoka's backstory.

E. K. Johnston’s Ahsoka novel is one of several beloved stories set in the Star Wars universe, up there with the greats like Darth Bane. After all, it features fan-favorite Ahsoka Tano and her struggles post-Order 66. We’re seeing her now more than ever, the most recent being Tales of the Jedi. If you’re wondering if the Resolve episode of Tales of the Jedi is an adaptation of the Ahsoka novel, you’re in the right place. It’s a bit complicated, though.

Is Tales of the Jedi an Adaptation of E. K. Johnston’s Ahsoka Novel?

Tales of the Jedi’s sixth episode Resolve is essentially a retelling of E. K. Johnston’s Ahsoka novel. It’s less of a retcon, close to an adaptation, but more of a reimagining.

Many of the major plot points that Tales of the Jedi and Ahsoka share are still intact. Ahsoka hides away under a fake name (the same Ashla, by the way), and even finds some semblance of a home on an agricultural moon.

In both stories, Ahsoka fights a lightsaber-wielding Inquisitor and quickly dispatches her would-be assassin by detonating their lightsaber. The departure here is Ahsoka used this moment to purify the red kyber crystals found in the lightsaber, turning them white and providing a reason for the color of her famous blades.

Another interesting plot point in Ahoka’s novel that’s missing from the animated series is a Force-sensitive child she covers for. That’s not to say it won’t in the future; Jedi’s tend to move from place to place.

Other than a few minor changes, that should give you a good idea of how the Resolve episode of Tales of the Jedi is adapted from the Ahsoka novel. It strips away some of the fluff, but keeps many of the more impactful plotlines. Either way, it’s still a fine example of why we need more one-off Star Wars shorts, especially if Tales of the Jedi is canon.
