During Chapter 8, as Laura and Ryan go exploring the old Hackett house and the mine underneath it, you’ll eventually come across Jacob in an electrified cage (if he hadn’t died before this). This guide will explain how to free Jacob from the cage in The Quarry so he can survive until the very end of the game.
This guide will dive into late-game spoilers, particularly regarding Chapter 8, the locals and the potential outcome of Jacob. If you’d like to enjoy the game spoiler-free, we recommend turning back now.
As Jacob rightfully points out, your goal here is to disarm and open his cage door, and the middle cage door, without opening the cage door of the monster on the other side. If you open the monster’s door and either of the other two, you can kill Jacob or Ryan and Laura, so be very careful.
How to Get Jacob Out of the Cage without Killing Him in The Quarry
To disarm the cage doors, you’ll need to use the circuit breakers on the wall across from the cages themselves. When Ryan has the choice to free Jacob or leave him, choose to free him and he’ll walk over to the circuit breaker.
When he turns around, you’ll see numbers above each of the cage doors. Jacob’s cage number is 3, the middle one is 5, and the monster’s cage is 7.
Now you need to pull two circuit breakers that add up to the cage number you want to disarm and open. So, for Jacob’s cage, you want to pull lever 1 and lever 2. Once you do this Jacob’s cage door will swing open.
Next, you need to flick circuit lever 1 and lever 4. These add up to five, and so when you do, the middle cage door will open.
Just like that Jacob is free from the cage, and the monster is still safely stuck in its electrified cell. After this, Jacob will find his way out of the underground and return to the relative safety of the outdoors. Meanwhile, Ryan and Laura will eavesdrop on the conversation the Hackett family is having above them.
What Happens If You Don’t Free Jacob from the Cage?
If you decide that Jacob’s better off in the safety of an electrified cell, then you run the risk of him being killed by the monster in the cage opposite.
Later on, in Chapter 9, Laura will have the option to either run or attack Jedediah. If you choose to run, she’ll hit the circuit board in the room they’re in, cutting the power. Doing so will disarm and open all of the electric cages, resulting in Jacob meeting an untimely end at the hands of the monster.
We’re still pushing through to see how other later decisions can affect not freeing Jacob, and we’ll update this post once we have.
