In Dying Light 2, you’ll need to do everything possible to survive the chaotic post-apocalyptic world that is the game’s setting. This includes everything from gathering resources to setting up safe zones that’ll protect you against zombies. Here is everything you need to know about how Windmills and Faction Structures work in Dying Light 2.
Windmills and Faction Structures in Dying Light 2
Windmills are important to progression in Dying Light 2. Any time you activate a Windmill, it creates a safe zone around it, providing a resting place protected by UV Light. They also illuminate optional activities and side quests around the area. Activating Windmills is as simple as climbing your way up to the very top using parkour.
Alongside providing a safe zone, Windmills also enable nearby Abandonded Structures to become Faction Structures, which house merchants, new quests, challenges, and an additional source of UV Light. The nature of these varies depending on who controls the surrounding area. You can also fast travel to Windmills, making them incredibly convenient once unlocked.
How to Assign Faction Structures
The first windmill you activate in the game will be of a neutral allegiance until the story takes you to the game’s first Faction Facility; you’ll then have the chance to either assign it to Peacekeepers or Survivors. Doing so will determine the people and quests you’ll find in the areas surrounding your Windmills and other Faction Structures.
Assigning these areas isn’t necessarily an easy decision, though, as your choices have significant moral and structural ramifications. For every sector in Dying Light 2, there is one Faction Facility. Depending on who you choose to assign it to, you will be giving that specific group full control over the area. Assign more areas to the Peacekeepers than the Survivors (or vice versa), and you’ll end up affecting the narrative.
Alongside an impact on the story, Peacekeepers or Survivor factions can be assigned control of Faction Facilities. While this is obviously ties into the faction aspect of the storyline, it’s only superficial. For example, you’re free to make storyline decisions that support one faction but assign facilities to another and have it not impact the outcome of the plot.
What it will mean, however, is that areas around the city will feature side quests and activities that revolve around a certain faction. So, if you’re into the Peacekeepers but prefer to assign Facilities to Survivors, you should know that all the activities and people you see around the region will be Survivors — which may or may not bother you.
So, why would you even do that? Well, assigning Faction Facilities will see different structures built around the city to aid your traversal. For example, if Peacekeepers control an area, they will build more traps across the sector, while if Survivors control the area, Aiden will have a lot more parkour-friendly obstacles around to help with traversal.
To keep track of all of your sectors and assignments throughout Dying Light 2, you can check the faction control map at any time in the menu after you make the Water Tower decision in the main story (pictured above). For every Faction Facility assigned to a given faction, you will get a new perk around any region of the city also controlled by that faction, which is displayed at the bottom.
