How To Block in Demon’s Souls

Blocking is a useful defensive tactic that isn’t as versatile as others, but it still gets the job done. Any enemy with a simple sword, bow, axe, or spear won’t be able to do much against a block. You just might even stagger them with your block.

As long as you have a weapon or shield in your left hand, then you’ll be able to block enemy attacks by pressing and holding L1. A shield is ideal for blocking, but you can also use a one-handed sword. Blocking is even possible if you’re wielding a sword that requires a two-handed grip.

If you have nothing equipped in your left hand, then you’ll just do a jab with your fist. You can still parry with an empty left hand, but blocking cannot be done barehanded.

However, using a shield will always be the best way to block in Demon’s Souls. You’ll always take some damage when blocking with a sword, but most shields will either drastically decrease the damage taken or completely nullify it.

Here’s a quick breakdown of how to block in Demon’s Souls:

  1. Have weapon or shield in left hand

It can be a single shield, a one-handed weapon, or a two-handed weapon.

  2. Press & hold L1

This will bring up your guard with the equipment in your left hand to block incoming attacks or arrows.

That’s all there is to know about how to block in Demon’s Souls. Blocking is a simple yet highly important part of the game that will make your whole experience in Boletaria a little bit less deadly.
