While Watch Dogs Legion may be releasing on the PS4 and Xbox One, a lot of players will be eagerly anticipating checking out the game’s rendition of a near-future London on their shiny new hardware — the PS5 or Xbox Series X. Touted as being considerably more powerful than their current-gen counterparts, the two consoles will make your games look and run better than ever. As such, some players may be wondering exactly what the Watch Dogs Legion PS5 and Xbox Series X enhancements are.
Watch Dogs Legion PS5 & Xbox Series X Enhancements
Thanks to Lathieeshe Thillainathan — the Live Producer on Watch Dogs: Legion — conducting an AMA over on Reddit, we now know how Watch Dogs Legion will run on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
According to the Thillainathan, the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions will benefit from “ray tracing, 4K, 30fps.” No further details were shared regarding whether or not there would be a “Performance Mode” that players could enable to disable ray tracing and bump the frame rate up to 60fps for a smoother-feeling experience.
What Is Ray Tracing?
4K, 30 FPS might not sound like a massive jump up from the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X that have been upscaling games in 4K for a couple of years now, but it’s ray tracing that’ll be a big game-changer here.
Ray Tracing is a rendering technique that produces incredibly realistic lighting effects. An algorithm calculates the path of light and simulates the way that it interacts with virtual objects within your environment.
Things like reflections and dark scenes should in theory look a lot more detailed and realistic with ray tracing enabled compared to the same scene or reflections without it.
