Coming up with a name for a pet or any other living thing is hard. A good name is important, but naming living things is a low-stakes game since we all are essentially ephemeral. On the other hand, naming a long-lasting island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a daunting task.
This thing will theoretically outlast you as long as your save file doesn’t get deleted or corrupted. You’re also going to spend a lot of time just laying out and relaxing on this island so you’ll want it to be something fun, yet not embarrassing to show someone else.
Look Around the Island
First, I would like to suggest that you give your island a little once-, twice- or thrice over. This should help you get a feel for the personality of your island. Is it shaped like a face? Does it already feel like home? What kind of fruit is native to it?
These are all very important questions that can help you come up with a name. Also, you’ll want to do this early on before you build the bonfire. Otherwise, you won’t get any time to take a look around and get a feel for what your island is all about.
Island Name Generators
If you’re not feeling especially creative today, then a fan-made island name generator might be exactly what you need. Just hit a button and out pops a name. You can’t make naming your island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons much easier than that.
Samuel Fine created this easy-to-use island name generator.
This generator can produce over 10,000 unique names and each one is no longer than 10 characters. They’re not all easy to pronounce, but you can cycle through them until you find one that fits.
Ouija Board
You might need to put naming your Animal Crossing: New Horizons island on hold to be able to do this method. Call over a few friends (just kidding, please stay home right now) or use this online ouija board and ask it what your island should be named.
I got Unclear and Cannot Tell. Okay, maybe that online ouija board isn’t the best option. But hey, at least it lets you know you’re not alone when it comes to being indecisive about what your island should be named.
Real or Fictional Islands
If you’ve ever taken a trip to an island and absolutely loved it, then that would be a great option. It’ll remind you of all the good times you had on that vacation. Every time you boot up New Horizons it’s going to feel like you’re heading back there all over again.
The same idea works when it comes to fictional islands. If there’s a town, location or island that brings back fond memories, then go for it. You can even decorate the town to resemble the source material if you truly want to go all out.
Leave It up to Chance
If you have a problem of coming up with too many names, then make a numbered list and grab a d20 (or use Google’s). Whatever you roll is the name of your island for Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
You can also create a bracket of all the possible names for your island if you’re hankering for some mad March tournaments. Flip a coin for each matchup to determine the winner. It might take a while, but at least you’ll end up with a pretty lucky island name.
Social Media
Last and absolutely the least is creating a Twitter poll to help with naming your island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Please don’t do this unless you have to. You probably won’t end up liking the result. However, this is highly dependant upon who your Twitter followers are.
Don’t put Butt as an option in there unless you feel completely comfortable with living on Butt for the rest of your New Horizons life. You could do the same on Facebook, but then you’ll just get a bunch of lectures from your parents about why you haven’t responded to their messages.
There are tons of ways to pick island names in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. And once you find the right name, it’ll be a clear fit. There’s truly no wrong name or wrong method so just have fun and pick something that you enjoy.
