Borderlands 3: What the Max Level Cap Is

Max that.

Borderlands 3 is another RPG that’ll see you spending a ton of your time leveling up your character, unlocking new skills, and generally making them more powerful as you progress through the main story missions and side quests. As such, chances are you might be wondering what the max level cap is in Borderlands 3.

Borderlands 3 Max Level Cap

Update 02/11/20: Today, Gearbox has announced that Borderlands 3’s max level cap will now be level 53. The increase of the level cap from 50 to 53 will come as part of the Broken Heart’s Day Event, coming to Borderlands 3 sometime later this month.

We’d hazard a guess it should arrive in the next couple of days, to coincide with Valentine’s Day, but only time will tell.

Original: Borderlands 3’s max level cap is level 50. Players will be able to level up their character by earning XP, which can be done by completing main and side missions, killing enemies, and playing with others.

Each time players level up, they’ll also earn a Skill Point which can be spent on either an Action Skill, or just any of the other abilities available within the three different Skill Trees.

What to Do After Reaching Level 50

Just because you’ve hit Borderlands 3’s max level cap of 50, doesn’t mean you’re all done with grinding out levels and making your character even more powerful.

Upon reaching Borderlands 3’s end game, players will then be able to level up their character’s Guardian Rank.

This is the game’s equivalent to the Badass Rank system we’ve seen in Borderlands 2, and your progress is shown towards the next rank by a Guardian Rank XP bar at the bottom of the screen.

What Guardian Ranks Do in Borderlands 3

After hitting level 50 max level cap and beginning your grind out of the Guardian Ranks in Borderlands 3, you’ll earn a Guardian Token each time you rank up. This can then be spent on bonus stats in one of the game’s three skill trees.

Once enough Guardian Tokens have been spent in each of the three different skill trees, players can also unlock additional Vault Hunter and weapon skins to really customize their loadout.

This will all come in particularly handy for anyone trying to taker on True Vault Hunter Mode, which is essentially Borderlands 3’s New Game Plus mode.

As such, just hitting the max level cap in the game isn’t enough to make your Vault Hunter the most powerful they can be, there’s plenty more to do.

Is There a Max Guardian Rank?

As Guardian Ranks are part of Borderlands 3’s end game, there isn’t a max rank that you’ll reach here. There is a finite number of rewards in the Guardian Rank skill trees obviously, but beyond that you’re free to keep earning Guardian Tokens infinitely.

In short,

  1. The max level cap is 50.

But once you reach the endgame, you’ll start levelling up your character’s Guardian rank.

  2. There’s no max Guardian Rank.

But there is a finite number of rewards in the skill trees that come as part of this end game content.
