Minecraft: How to Breed Horses
The world of Minecraft can be massive and walking around it can take forever. It can also get pretty lonely. Having a horse in Minecraft can help you get around quickly, but if you want to build an army of horses, that’s entirely possible, too. Here’s how to breed horses in Minecraft.
Breeding Horses in Minecraft
Step 1: Find Two Horses
First, you’ll need to get two horses. These can normally be found in the Plains biome. The Plains biome in Minecraft is often a large, flat area with green grass. There are a bunch of lakes here, too.
Step 2: Fence Them In
When you’ve found two horses, build a quick fence around them. They need to be next to one another for the entire breeding process. If you’re struggling to keep them together, use a lead to move one to the other.
Step 3: Taming the Horses
After fencing the horses in, it’s simply a case of taming them both. This can be done by selecting an empty slot on your hotbar and interacting with the horse. This is done by pressing the following:
- PS4 – L2
- Xbox One – LT
- Nintendo Switch – ZL
- PC/ Mac (All Versions): Right click on horse
You’ll now hop onto the back of the horse, but only temporarily. The horse will buck you off, and when it does, you’ll need to get back on.
Each time you get back on the horse, you’ll be able to stay on for longer. Eventually, red hearts will appear around the horse and it’ll no longer buck you off. Congratulations, you’ve tamed a horse.
Now do this with the other horse and we’ll almost be ready to breed horses in Minecraft.
Step 4: Feeding the Horses
To get horses to enter ‘breeding mode’ for want of a better term, you’ll need to feed them particular items. Any of the following food items will work:
- Golden Apples
- Enchanted Golden Apples
- Golden Carrots
You’ll need to make sure you have two of any of these so you can feed one to each of your two horses.
Red hearts will come from each horse after they’ve eaten the apple or carrot. Once they both have these red hearts, they’ll turn around to face one another.
Step 5: Horse Breeding Complete
After a little bit, the hearts will stop and a smaller horse will appear next to your two horses that you fenced in and fed. Congratulations, you’ve just bred horses in Minecraft.
