While Pokemon Sword and Shield’s Galar Pokedex includes a number of new creatures we’ve never seen before, it also includes some classics. The Galar region also has its own variants of certain Pokemon, and Meowth is one of them. The big-bearded one is the Galar variant, but it’s possible to get a normal, Kanto Meowth in Pokemon Sword and Shield, that you can evolve into Persian, too.
Getting Kanto Meowth in Pokemon Sword & Shield
There are actually two ways you can get a Kanto Meowth in the games. First, we’ll talk you through the permanent option you’ll always be able to use in the game to get one.

Trading For a Kanto Mewoth in Pokemon Sword & Shield
- Get a Galarian Meowth
This can be found on Route 4. It has a 35% chance of being in the grass, and 25% spawn rate of it appearing in the overworld.
- Go to Turffield
If you’ve unlocked the Flying Taxi service, use this from your Town Map.
- Head to Turffield Gym
It’s right in the center of the town at the back.
- Speak to this little boy and confirm you want to trade Galarian Meowth for Kanto Meowth
It’s level 18 and called Cash.
Free Gigantamax Mystery Gift Meowth in Pokemon Sword and Shield
If you’ve got Pokemon Sword and Shield during its first two months on-sale, you’ll be able to get a free Meowth that also has the ability to gigantamax.
This Mystery Gift Meowth is only available from Nov. 15, 2019, until Jan. 15, 2020.
To do this, simply follow these steps:
- Load up Pokemon Sword or Shield.
- Once it’s loaded up, press X to open the menu.
- Select ‘Mystery Gift.’
- Choose the ‘Get a Mystery Gift’ option.
- Now, select ‘Get Via Internet.’
- Your game will download Meowth. Save your game.
- It can be found in your Party or one of your Boxes.
This Kanto Meowth obtained through the Mystery Gift promotion cannot evolve into Persian. If you want its more powerful evolution, you’ll need to use the first trading method listed above, instead.
Evolving Kanto Meowth Into Persian in Pokemon Sword and Shield
The Kanto Meowth evolves into Persian at level 28. Simply keep it in your party, play with it at Pokemon Camps, and battle with your Meowth to help it level up fast. When it hits level 28, it will evolve automatically.
