Just as in all previous Pokemon games, evolving Pokemon is something players will be doing frequently as they work toward completing their Pokedex and give their Pokemon the opportunity to learn new and powerful abilities. Not all Pokemon are evolved in the same way, though. Here’s how to evolve Applin into Flapple or Appletun in Sword & Shield.
How to Get Applin
Let’s start right at the beginning of Applin’s evolutionary cycle. If you haven’t already got Applin, this grass and dragon type within the non-overworld section of Route 5. It also spawns in the Stony Wilderness and Dusty Bowl, among other places.
Applin has two evolutions: Flapple, and Appletun.
How to Evolve Applin into Flapple or Appletun in Sword & Shield
Most Pokemon will evolve naturally when they reach a certain level, but some require a special requirement. In the case of Applin, evolution is triggered when it is fed a special type of food.
Depending on whether you want Flapple or Appletun, you will need to feed it either Tart or Sweet Apple respectively.
However, keep in mind that Tart is only available in Shield, while Sweet Apple is only available in Sword. Therefore, you’ll be limited to which form you can evolve Applin into depending on which version of the game you have.
Getting Sweet Apple & Tart
To get either of these foods you will need to head to Hammerlocke with your Applin. The city is accessible only once you have beaten the third gym leader.
Once you have arrived, follow the road around to the left, past the clothing shops and the second Pokemon Center. You should see a man in a red jacket just before you get to a drawbridge.
Speak with this man and give him your Applin. He’ll then return it with either Sweet Apple or Tart depending on which version of the game you have.
Trading for Flapple or Appletun
Of course, this doesn’t mean one of the Pokemon will be unavailable to you. You can always trade with another trainer to get the one you aren’t able to evolve Applin into.
That should be all you need to know about how to evolve Applin into Flapple or Appletun in Pokemon Sword & Shield. For more useful tips and guides on the game, do check out our extensive guide wiki.
