5 Cool Things You Can Do in Zelda: Link’s Awakening

This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information

Link’s Awakening may be a shorter and smaller game when you compare it to 3D Zelda titles, but the charm and odd nature of Koholint Island makes it a breeding ground for cool things to be found. Here are some of the cool things that you can do in Link’s Awakening that you might not have known.

Steal From the Shopkeeper

There are some pretty expensive items in the Town Tool shop in Mabe Village such as a bow and arrow and a chamber stones for the dungeon creator.

It can be hard to get so many rupees in a short amount of time but there is a way to cheat the system and rob the shopkeeper of his wares. I know, Link would never do such a thing but stealing is possible in Link’s Awakening and it’s pretty cool.

After you grab the item from the shelf, you will then want to run around the shopkeeper so that he gets confused and looks away from the main entrance. When he’s not looking, run past the door and you will now be labeled as a thief.

Marin will call you a thief, other locals will call you a thief, and if you try to go back into the shop, the owner will strike you down and kill you in one hit with some weird magical attack.

We don’t recommend doing this, but it’s neat little easter egg from the original game.

Hang Out With Marin and Cause Trouble

There comes a point in Link’s Awakening where you’ll be able to travel all around the island with Marin by your side.

Instead of taking her to the walrus in Animal Village, you can pretty much explore the island and get into all kinds of mischief and enjoy some nice moments too.

If you take her to the Trendy Game shop in Mabe Village, for example, she’ll start playing the crane game and will actually somehow grab the gamekeeper by his head and drop him into the prize area –who knew Marin would be such a troublemaker?

She’ll also encourage you to hit the Cucco with your sword over and over again even though the consequences can be fatal.

If you throw pots around in her own home, she’ll even call Link a bad boy –what a flirt.

There are several other little interactions that you can have with her that really fleshes out her relationship with Link so be sure to experiment.

Have a Pet Chain Chomp

Towards the beginning of the game, you’ll be tasked with rescuing a Chain Chomp named BowWow from some monsters, and as soon as you find him, he’ll join your side like a loyal pup would.

BowWow will attack enemies for you, he can eat some of the dangerous bushes in Goponga Swamp and he just makes the adventure a bit more enjoyable.

Link is not able to hang on to BowWow for the entire game but man, I wish there was a way because Link with a Chain Chomp is the coolest thing ever.

Relax and Go Fishing

So I’m aware that fishing in real life isn’t the most exciting hobby for everyone but in Link’s Awakening, it can actually be quite relaxing and enjoyable.

By going up the fisherman’s pond in Mabe Village, you’ll be able to choose from three types of lure and try to catch as many fish as you can –you might even find a Blooper or a Cheep Cheep.

Not only will you be rewarded with rupees based on the size of the fish but there’s also some secret seashells and other goodies hidden in the water for you to uncover.

Water Rafting Mini-Game

By going to the Raft Shop in the northeastern section of the island, you’ll find a man who runs a little water rafting mini-game.

You can choose from two different modes, one that has you collecting as many rupees as you can and another that is based on how fast you can get to the end of the river.

There are tons of rupees, secret seashells, and even heart pieces to be found here and if you like breaking your personal records, this mini-game can be a pretty entertaining time-waster.

That’s our list on some of the cool things that you can do in Zelda: Link’s Awakening. For more on the new Switch title, be sure to read our scored review, check out our extensive Guide Wiki, and dive into some tips and tricks.
