Super Smash Bros Ultimate is finally out for the Nintendo Switch, which means it’s time for you to get your friends together, throw down, and see once and for all who the true lord of video games is. Kidding aside, the game’s release is also exciting news for competitive players. If you want to fight against only the very best players, here’s how to unlock Elite Smash Mode and what it does in Super Smash Bros Ultimate.

Elite Smash Mode is basically a special matchmaking queue that only pairs you up with other players who also have the mode unlocked. It’s reserved for players who have earned a certain amount of GSP (Global Smash Power) for a specific character in the game.

At the moment, there are varying reports of how much GSP you actually need to unlock the mode, ranging between 450k to one million. However, reports from other players also suggest that the requirement for unlocking this mode in Super Smash Bros Ultimate probably has something to do with your win-loss ratio as well.

There are reports of players unlocking Elite Smash Mode at 400,000 GSP, but with a very good win-loss ratio. For now, it sounds as though you’ll either need to hit one million GSP with a character or have a good win-loss ratio in order to unlock Elite Smash Mode in Smash Bros Ultimate.

Once you’ve unlocked this mode in Smash Bros Ultimate, you’ll be able to face off against high ranking players, and this should give you more of a challenge as you’ll no longer be matched with newcomers or less experienced players who just got into the game.

Outside of that, however, there isn’t really much of a difference between this mode and regular matchmaking. You’ll probably have a higher chance of getting into 1v1 matches, but you’ll also still be able to play with custom rule sets.

That’s all you need to know about how to unlock Elite Smash Mode in Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Be sure to check our Smash Bros Ultimate guide wiki for more tips and information on the game.
