Red Dead Redemption 2 puts a big focus on crafting and survival mechanics. You’ll find yourself having to carry dozens of different materials and ingredients across the wild west. Upgrading your Satchel, then, should be high on your list of priorities. Here’s how to get satchel upgrades in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Upgrading your satchel isn’t as a simple as saving up enough money or completing a certain mission. Like many of the different upgrades in the game, you’ll have to craft them, and that means locating the right materials. Specifically, the correct pelts — which means a lot of hunting.

First, you’ll certainly want to familiarize yourself with the basics of hunting and where to find specific animals. Good thing we’ve written this handy how to hunt guide and where the best hunting locations are, then, huh?

Once you’re up to speed, it’s a matter of locating the right pelts for the task of actually upgrading your satchel. As a reminder, you’ll need to speak with Pearson at the gang’s camp to craft pelts.

Pearson will be able to upgrade your satchel from the start of Chapter 2, as the gang settles on Horseshoe Overlook. Before he can actually work on them, though, you’ll need to have upgraded your leather tools. To do so, save up some money and select the option from the ledger.

The Best Satchels Upgrades in Red Dead Redemption 2

There is a range of different satchel upgrades in the game, and most of them require perfect pelts. Sometimes, from rare animals. Here’s a list of the best satchel upgrades in Red Dead Redemption 2 and the various pelts you’ll need to craft them:

Tonics – Increases carrying capacity for all Tonics

You must upgrade the medicine wagon twice and have the Leather Working Tools to craft the Tonics Satchel.  Perfect Deer Pelt, Perfect Buck Pelt, and Perfect Elk Pelt are required for this satchel.

Ingredients – Increases carrying capacity of ingredients

You’ll need the better Leather Working Tools and donate animal carcasses to Pearson.

Kit – More capacity for general items

To craft the Kit Satchel, upgrade your Leather Working Tools and donate 3 valuables to the tithing box.

Provisions – Increased carrying capacity for provisions.

Upgrade your Provisions twice, and must also have Leather Working Tools. Need the following pelts: Perfect Deer Pelt, Perfect Bison Pelt, and Perfect Racoon Pelt.

Materials – Increased material storing capacity

Must have Leather Working Tools, then craft 3 recipes at the Scout Fire.

Valuables – Can store more valuables (anything that sells for cash)

Must have Leather Working Tools and then donate $50 to the Tithing Box. Need the following pelts: Perfect Deer Pelt, Perfect Rabbit Pelt, Perfect Beaver Pelt

Legend of the East – More carrying capacity for all items

Must have Leather Working Tools and have crafted all other satchels.
