One of the key aspects of Red Dead Redemption 2‘s world is its horses. While they can be used for a manner of different applications in the game, you’ll really just want one that’s fast, reliable, and that you’ve bonded well with. As your galloping across the wild west, however, you’ll want to ensure you’re doing so in style. Just because your horse looks a certain way when you get it, doesn’t mean that it has to look that way forever. Here’s how to change and customize horse appearance in Red Dead Redemption 2.

How to Change Horse Appearance

The first and most obvious thing you’ll need to do is ensure you’ve got your horse to hand. When you’re on your horse or are just leading it around, you’ll need to head towards a stable. These are marked on your map in Red Dead Redemption 2 by a horseshoe. If you hover the icon over it for long enough, a little information box will appear giving you a brief description of the uses of stables in the game. Press X on PS4 or A on Xbox One to set a waypoint to the stable, and off you go.

Once you arrive at the stables, you’ll want to either ride or lead your horse in through the large doors at the front. You’ll hit a quick loading screen, and then have a variety of different options to choose from. You can either buy a new horse, manage your current one (or any horses you might have in the stables there), and buy additional or upgraded equipment for your noble steed, too. In order to change horse appearance in Red Dead Redemption 2, you’re going to want to select the option to Manage Owned Horses.

You should now see the names or breeds (if they don’t have a name) of the horses you either have with you or in the stables. Select the one you want to change the look of, and you’ll now be greeted with categories to change the Tack or Grooming of your chosen horse. To change the physical appearance of the horse itself, you want to head into Grooming. For things like your saddle, saddlebag, blankets, and bedrools, you’ll want to select Tack instead.

What Horse Features You Can Change

You can change horse appearance in Red Dead Redemption 2 in a number of ways. From the color and style of their manes and tails to the different accessories you can have equipped, their color, and a whole lot more. We’ve included screenshots within this post of all of the customizable horse options you have available to you in Red Dead Redemption 2.

However, keep in mind, every customization or change to a horse’s appearance you make in the game will cost you money, so make sure you’ve got the spare cash before going ahead and giving your horse the makeover it deserves.

How to Rename Your Horse

Finally, if you want to rename your horse in Red Dead Redemption 2, this is also possible. Rather than selecting the Tack or Grooming options, you instead want to choose the Services option. Here, you’ll find the Horse Care Package, which fully restores all horse cores and yields Gold cores, and the Rename Horse option.

It won’t cost you a cent to rename your horse in Red Dead Redemption 2, so simply select the option, enter your desired name with the on-screen keyboard, and you’ll be all set to go.
