Avatar: The Last Airbender

Avatar: The Last Airbender

This first entry shouldn’t be too much of a surprise, especially considering the fact that The Dragon Prince and Avatar: The Last Airbender both share the same writer, Aaron Ehasz. Both shows are basically stories about trying to save the world from an ongoing war sweeping the nation. While Callum and his crew are off trying to deliver the dragon egg to Xadia, Aang and his friends are trying to put an end to the Fire Nation’s long-standing tyranny.

Not to mention that both shows even share an element of magic, evident by the different spells and bending abilities in The Dragon Prince and Avatar: The Last Airbender. They even share the same presentation in terms of the different books comprising each season. Heck, even Sokka’s voice actor plays Callum in The Dragon Prince. All that said, Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the closest shows you’ll find like The Dragon Prince. Oh, and it’s also worth pointing out that Netflix is making a live-action version of this show.

The Legend of Korra

Korra

The Legend of Korra is the continuation of the Avatar series, starring a completely new protagonist and her group of friends. While the stories may be different, the themes are pretty much the same as the first show. This time around, the conflict is split into different stories depending on each season, but it always falls down to keeping peace, harmony, and balance to the world.

Characters in The Legend of Korra might be older than the ones in The Dragon Prince, but both still share the same amount of wit and courage. Korra is a headstrong, confident young woman who slowly grows into a dependable and mature beacon of hope. While Callum starts out as a clumsy and shy prince, we slowly see him take charge and evolve into a leader of their party. As with Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra and The Dragon Prince also share the same magical elements and presentation style. If you’ve already watched the first show, there’s no going wrong with starting Korra’s saga.

RWBY

RWBY, BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle

From the get-go, you’ve probably already noticed the similar art style between RWBY and the Dragon Prince. Both shows rely on CGI and hand-drawn animation to create some beautiful visuals, although their similarities run deeper than that. RWBY is about a group of four young women –Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang– who are studying to become Huntresses, licensed elite warriors who keep the peace from deadly creatures known as Grimm. As such, RWBY and The Dragon Prince also emphasize greatly on magic, which plays a big part in their rich lore.

Both The Dragon Prince and RWBY are coming-of-age stories that delve into making some serious life choices, despite how dangerous and tough it may be. Apart from the Grimm, Ruby and her crew face countless threats, from a terrorist group to evil syndicates, leading them to dark and deadly roads. RWBY has finished its fifth season, with the sixth airing this October. There’s no better time than now to start binging this show if you’ve already finished The Dragon Prince.

Teen Titans

If you were a big fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender, then chances are you probably already know about Teen Titans. While there are plenty of animated superhero shows, none of them really picked up as Teen Titans did. This DC TV show follows a group of fledgling superheroes –Robin, Starfire, Cyborg, Beast Boy, and Raven– who go about fighting crime and saving citizens. However, their adventures delved much deeper than simply fighting crime as we get to see them grow as characters, and more importantly, as a team.

Both The Dragon Prince and Teen Titans share the same morals, which is basically doing what’s good and right, but they also have the same depth of character development. The Teen Titans are an amalgam of different humans, cyborgs, and aliens, and the same can be said for Callum, Ezran, Rayla, and Bait. Still, both groups manage to work around their differences and aim for a common goal, which is always the greater good.

Adventure Time

adventure time, lego

Adventure Time follows a 12 year-old boy named Finn and his dog named Jake who go on adventures. The pair head around the land of Ooo to fight the forces of evil or spend some quality time with their friends, pretty much depending on the situation. While Adventure Time might not take itself too seriously at times, the show does come with some deep lore that expands itself in later seasons.

As with The Dragon Prince, Adventure Time also has some coming-of-age elements mixed in its rather silly story. These characters also share a strong sense of justice despite all of the crazy things going on in their respective worlds. That said, Adventure Time is full of funny moments, and if you’re looking for a show that isn’t all too demanding, this is definitely right up your alley.

Steven Universe

Like Adventure Time, Steven Universe is another Cartoon Network exclusive that centers around a young boy named Steven who lives with three aliens. While the premise might sound a bit strange, Steven Universe is packed with plenty of action, as the group embarks on different adventures to help their friends and save the world.

While both shows might have completely different themes, Steven Universe and The Dragon Prince are coming-of-age stories and stand by the notion of fighting for the greater good. Moreover, while Steven Universe doesn’t rely heavily on magic, it does have its own supernatural elements, as evident by the different gems in the series. These stones also play a big part in the overarching lore and Steven’s backstory.

Voltron: Legendary Defender

The Voltron series made a huge comeback when a new animated series was announced back in 2016. After airing on Netflix a few years back, it went on for seven seasons, with the eighth season already planned out. The story follows a group of young men –Shiro, Keith, Lance, Pidge, and Hunk– who get swept up into the Galran War, fighting for peace against the Galra Empire.

While Voltron does stick to some of the tried and tested tropes, it does its best to inject its own personal charms. Having said that, The Dragon Prince and Voltron: Legendary Defender both share similar aspects and themes, including a raging war and a group of heroes fighting for peace. Not to mention that they’re both on Netflix, so you can catch up on Voltron right now.
