What Is the Soft Cap in Destiny 2: Forsaken

Recommended Videos

Destiny 2: Forsaken is here, and like any proper Destiny expansion, there’s an increase in power level and hordes of new gear, activities, and events to help you get to the max level and power cap.

More daunting and traumatic than the new level and power level cap, is the dreaded soft cap. Experienced Destiny 2 players know about this soft cap all too well. When you first hit a new expansion, your power level will quickly rise to new heights very rapidly. At a certain point though, the gear you get will be restricted to a certain power level, and after that, the only way to get gear higher than that is to take part in certain activities and complete specific milestones.

In Destiny 2: Forsaken, the soft cap is power level 500. Meaning, without milestones or completing certain activities, the highest power level you’ll find through common activities is at the soft cap of 500.

To break the soft cap of 500, you’ll need to do a couple of things. First, you’ll need to complete your weekly challenges (which are another way to get powerful gear in addition to milestones now). Weekly challenges earn you “powerful” legendary gear, which is code for: will be guaranteed to be higher than your current power level. These weekly challenges are marked on the “Destinations” portion of the main menu by yellow star-looking markers on the planet. When you click into a planet/activity, you will see a blue quest banner, which will tell you what you need to do to earn that powerful engram. There are daily challenges as well, but that will only award you with regular legendary gear.

Be on the look out for any activity marked on the map in that way, and/or contain the reward of “powerful gear.” In addition to that, the raid is weekly source of powerful gear, and when that is released on Sept. 14, you can complete that too for more powerful gear. Finally, although we’re still investigating, we believe the Blind Well, a new activity in The Dreaming City, may be a source of powerful gear as well.

That does it for what the soft cap is in Destiny 2: Forsaken. Be sure to check out our wiki guide for more tips and tricks.
