Monster Hunter World has broken all kinds of records for Capcom quickly becoming one of their best selling games of all time. Now that the game is out on PC as well, even more hunters are jumping into the mix, which means more companions to play with. Of course, for everyone jumping into Monster Hunter World for the very first time, you’re no doubt going to want to know what the best starting weapon is.

With 14 different weapon types in Monster Hunter World it can be a bit difficult to figure out what to start with, but there are a few good options. We’ll help go over a few good choices for best starting weapon for newcomers to Monster Hunter World.

Best Starting Weapon in Monster Hunter World

  • Sword and Shield – The sword and shield is a good choice for starting weapon because it’s very versatile in terms of both offense and defense. Attacks with this weapon are fast, but you can also block damage in a pinch when you find yourself overwhelmed. Because of this duality it’s also a very forgiving weapon if you happen to make a mistake, and you can consume healing items without putting the weapon away as an added bonus.
  • Switch Axe – While the switch axe is more of a mid-level weapon it can be good for beginners to start with to learn the ins and outs of combat. The versatile weapon can switch back and forth between a light sword and a heavy axe, giving you a whole range of combat options depending on which monster you’re going up against. Because of its switching ability, it can be useful to use the switch axe to learn how heavier weapons in the game handle, while still giving yourself the benefit of the quick sword option. The weapon also has some devastating special attacks that can cause serious damage.
  • Long Sword – In general, quick weapons in Monster Hunter World don’t cause much damage, meaning battles can drag on for a long time. The long sword strikes a balance between being quick and powerful, however, as its attacks can easily be pulled off without huge wind-ups or recovery time. Its moves are relatively easy to learn compared to other weapons and can hit a large area, instead of needing to be honed in on a specific spot.
  • Dual Blades – The dual blades are most useful because they’re one of the fastest weapons in Monster Hunter World. They don’t have the ability to block, however, they can cause some serious DPS, especially if you manage to learn its gauge. By pressing R2 you’ll enter demon mode, which boosts your damage but drains a red gauge instead of your stamina. Dual blades can help you learn to string combos together and balance different elements like dodging and gauge management. They’re fairly easy to learn and can open up the door to other weapon types.

Keep in mind that these are all just suggestions for newcomers to Monster Hunter World. These weapons are easier to learn in general, but if you’re really determined to jump right in with a complex weapon you can do just that.
