5 Best Steam Games of July 2018

The Ys series has been slowly inching its way on Steam, with Lacrimosa of Dana recently launching a few months back. This time, the developers have brought over another entry in the series, Memories of Celceta. This game was once a PSP exclusive, following Adol on yet another adventure as he explores the vast forest of Celceta, uncovering its many secrets along the way.

Players control three different characters and can seamlessly switch between any fighter in the game. Sea of Celceta upholds Ys’ smooth and tight action combat system and follows the three specific attack types: Slash, Strike, and Pierce. Each character has their own assigned attack type, and the key to winning battles is by exploiting enemy weaknesses. Ys: Memories of Celceta is definitely worth looking into if you’re a big fan of action role-playing games.

The Banner Saga 3

The Banner Saga comes to a close with this final installment in the series on Steam. If you’ve been following along, the third game takes place right where the second left off, along with any choices you made throughout your adventure. The final entry ties everything together after carefully weaving a story based on your choices thus far.

All of your decisions leading up to this point will lead to their consequences, be it good or bad, and you’re forced to experience each one. Story aside, The Banner Saga 3 still follows the same tactical combat with some streamlined additions mixed in for good measure. All that said, The Banner Saga is definitely a game you’d want to start with from the very beginning before you touch the last installment. Check out our thoughts on the final entry of the series here.

Mothergunship

5 Best Steam Games of July 2018

If you’re a big fan of non-stop guns and explosions, Mothergunship has you covered with all of the first-person, bullet-hell madness going on. After originally releasing last year on consoles, the game has finally hit Steam last July, bringing all of the action with it. Mothergunship is all about exploring different, randomly generated levels that are packed with enemies who will hound you with lasers, bullets, missiles, and all sorts of projectiles that will have you dancing around like a madman.

Part of what makes Mothergunship so compelling is that you have your own set of fully-customizable firearms at your disposal. Players craft their own guns that can cater to their own specific play style, and there’s no shortage of firearms you can craft in the game. In Mothergunship, you’ll always find yourself moving and dodging bullets before pelting enemies with your own. And if playing alone isn’t your thing, you can always recruit another friend for the ride on Steam.

Shining Resonance Refrain

5 Best Steam Games of July 2018

JRPG fans can rejoice as Shining Resonance Refrain has finally arrived in the west. What was once a Japan-exclusive title is now available on Steam after landing this July. The Shining series tells the story of dragons, your budding JRPG heroes, and musical instruments all strewn together in a bundle of eight chapters in the game. Resonance Refrain dumps turn-based battles for real-time combat – almost something akin to the Tales series.

Players can control a character while having the ability to issue commands to the other members of your party. That being said, characters can form bonds together during combat, giving them a sequential boost when paired together in the same party. While Resonance Refrain is definitely no Final Fantasy or Tales game, it still holds its own as a reasonable RPG that’s sure to scratch any JRPG fan’s itch. You can check out our thoughts on the game here.

Chasm

Metroidvania fans can look forward to another epic adventure with Chasm. Here, you play as a new recruit from the Guildean Kingdom and set off on a new mission in a mining town. Upon arriving, however, you soon discover that the townspeople have been kidnapped by some supernatural creatures that thrive underground. As a knight, you continue your mission by saving the townspeople and freeing them from the clutches of the vile monsters.

That being said, you’ll be doing plenty of exploring and combat in Chasm, with over six randomly generated rooms waiting for you to explore. There are tons of different weapons and armor at your disposal, and you can customize your play style with an assortment of powerful spells and abilities. With monsters to defeat and abilities to unlock, Chasm provides a hefty challenge for those seeking to test their mettle.
