The Sims 4 For Rent Best Multi-Unit Build Ideas

Let's get neighborly!

For Rent is the latest Expansion Pack for The Sims 4, allowing players to create fully customizable multi-unit dwellings and experience life as a Property Owner or tenant within the bustling new city of Tomarang.

One of the key new features of the pack is these new multi-unit dwellings — players are now able to create several housing units on the same lot, allowing multiple different households to live on one lot together. If you’re interested in putting this new multi-unit living feature to use and creating new unique stories with your Sims, here are some of the best apartment ideas for the Sims 4 For Rent.

How Multi-Family Units Work in For Rent

When building on a lot, players with For Rent will be able to select certain rooms or floors on a lot and assign them to a specific unit, indicating that they will be treated as a different house for a different household. You’ll be able to have up to six different units on one lot, each being able to house up to eight sims (however, it’s been alluded to that you may be able to have even more units using cheats).

While this feature is being introduced with For Rent, the trailer for these multi-family units revealed that they will also be compatible with other Expansion Packs including Get Famous, Discover University, and Growing Together. Here are some of the best ways you can utilize this new building system in your Sims game.

University Dorms

The Discover University Expansion Pack introduced University life to The Sims 4, allowing Sims to live in Dorms — a special housing lot in which your Sim could live with other Sim roommates that were not a part of your household. However, these pre-built dorms are uncustomizable without cheats, and players cannot choose what other Sims live in the dorms beyond their own household. If you enjoy University living and dorm-life, but want more control over your Sim’s new roommates and neighbors, the multi-unit living system will be a perfect fix.

By building an apartment complex and making each room or floor its own unit, you’ll be able to have your Sims live in the world of Britechester with other University-attending Sims, while still having control over what Sims are living on the lot. If you’re creating new Sims to move into the building with your own, just make sure you’re enrolling them in University as well!

Multi-Generational Homes

Legacy playthroughs are one of the most beloved playstyles in The Sims 4. If you enjoy seeing your Sims family tree grow and develop, but get stressed out managing several different households throughout your world, then having different households within your extended family living on one lot may be the perfect solution. This not only allows you to keep tabs on what other family members are up to, but also lets you maintain close family relationships within your Sim’s family with ease.

If you want all your families living in close-quarters, you can create one large family-style home where each household gets their own floor or section of the home. If you want more space and separation between the different households within your family, you can build multiple smaller homes on one large lot, with communal dining and playground areas outside for your Sims to spend time together.

Custom Apartment Buildings

City Living was one of the earlier Expansion Packs released for The Sims 4, and is the only one that has come with apartment buildings. Apartment buildings are a great way to have your Sims live in close proximity to their neighbors in a city setting, however none of the ones in City Living are customizable beyond your Sims’ own rooms.

By making each section of rooms on each floor its own unit, you can now create your own fully customizable apartment buildings, where the lobby, hallways, and every room can be designed exactly how you want it. By doing this, you can create entirely new modern apartments in San Myshuno, or introduce apartment-style living into other worlds you own.

Miniature Villages

The Sims is no stranger to cozy-style gameplay, and the release of the Cottage Living Expansion Pack has paved the way for a large community of Simmers who enjoy relaxing, slow-paced and more rural stories. Building a miniature village in a world like Henford-on-Badgley or Chestnut Ridge is the perfect way to recreate that relaxing, small-town living experience that you get when playing cozy games like Stardew Valley or Harvest Moon.

Creating several small townhouses next to each other along the sides of the lot, with several community farming areas, recreation areas, or shared animal barns and coops can create the impression of a close-knit farming community. Having plants or animals from the Cottage Living or Horse Ranch Expansion Packs on a multi-unit lot is also a good way to ensure your Sims have some additional help taking care of their livestock and agriculture.

Boarding School Housing

Children and Teenagers are often neglected when it comes to new gameplay features in The Sims 4, however there are plenty of players who love creating stories with these younger life stages. If you have the High School Years pack and want to create more dynamic stories centered around your younger Sims, creating housing for a boarding school can be a fun way to mix up your gameplay.

To do so, your teenage sims can move into their own unit with one adult caretaker. Using a large dormitory building, you can designate each floor as its own unit, housing several other teenage Sims for your own Sims to interact with, study with, and forge relationships with. If you own the High School Years Pack, then your Sim will be able to attend High School with all the other Sims who live in their dormitory.
