The Mario & Luigi games were somewhat an anomaly. Could Nintendo truly recapture the magic from Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario? They did – better yet, they improved on them. The original Mario RPGS were characterized by comedic writing, active combat mechanics, and exploration of Mario’s (and Luigi’s) world. Back in 2003, Nintendo brought the GameBoy Advance to life with Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga. The astounding success of this new Mario RPG brought forth more entries in the “saga,” including: Partners in Time, Bowser’s Inside Story, Dream Team, and now Paper Jam.

While all the games are somewhat related, no official timeline exists for any subsequent game in the series. Nintendo has however tied all the games together through a series of various easter eggs scattered throughout the franchise. Here are a few:

Prince Peasley in Partners in Time

The prince and hero of the Beanbag kingdom makes a cameo in Partners in Time…kinda. Prince Peasley helped Mario and Luigi stop the evil Cackletta in the original Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga, and to this day, remains good friends with Princess Peach and the rest of the Mushroom Kingdom. His portrait can be found behind the counter of a shop in Princess Peach’s Castle.

To find this easter egg, you must go to Toad’s shop in Princess Peach’s castle. Once inside, you can find the Prince Peasley portrait right behind the Toad standing at the counter.

Kurbio’s Shoeluigi, mario, paper jam, superstar saga, partners in time, dream team, bowsers inside story

While this easter egg doesn’t connect any of the Mario & Luigi games, it does call back to Mario’s power-up from Super Mario Bros. 3. This shoe continues to provide Mario protection in his adventures through Dimble Woods in Bowser’s Inside Story.

This easter egg is encountered during the regular course of events in the game, specifically, during the Dimble Woods portion of the game.

Zelda Easter Egg

Less of a connection and more of a cute nod to the Legend of Zelda franchise, this easter egg can be found during the tutorial of Bowser’s Inside Story. During training, Toad let’s out, “They’re a secret to everybody,” this line that echoes back to the original Legend of Zelda line, “It’s a secret to everybody.”

Broque Monsieur

Mario and Luigi first encountered Broque Monsieur, the Mushroom Kingdom’s premier block collector in Bowser’s Inside Story. Unlike most citizens in the Mushroom Kingdom, Broque in not a fan of Mario and Luigi at all. Their incessant need to destroy blocks does nothing but devalue a perfectly good block. He’s later seen again in Dream Team talking trash about the brothers when he thinks no one can hear.

If anything, it’s a minor callback and an attempt at continuity on Nintendo’s behalf.
