Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is the Highest Played Entry in the Series on Steam

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey may have only released last week, but that hasn’t stopped a record number of players from flocking to the open world title via the digital gaming platform Steam.

According to player data collected by Steam, Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey registered over 62,000 concurrent players in only its first weekend of availability. This marked a 33 percent increase over the total number of players registered for Assassin’s Creed Origins, the last entry in the series released in 2017 which hit a peak of 41,000 players in its lifetime. Odyssey has also reached sixth place on Steam’s list of most played games, jumping several places higher than Origins’ record of tenth place during its run of popularity.

The news comes following a generally successful launch for the latest entry in the Assassin’s Creed series, with fans and critics alike praising Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’s gameplay and open world design. Set in ancient Greece, the title follows Kassandra or Alexios based on which character the player chooses at the start of the game. The sole survivor of an attack on their village, they set out on a quest for revenge against the perpetrator, a mysterious individual with unknown ties and motivations.

To this end, players can take on quests and missions as a mercenary, battling with enemies in melee and ranged combat. They can also traverse the country by land and sea, and uncover clues to the whereabouts of their enemy as well as ancient secrets and lost civilizations.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is currently available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
