METROID PRIME 4 REVEAL
Nintendo, once again, decided to opt out of having a proper E3 press conference this year. Instead, they put together a 30 minute presentation called Nintendo Spotlight, where they highlighted the 3DS and Switch games that will be coming in 2017. Nintendo managed to also sneak in some announcements for titles that won’t be coming until much later. Let’s take a look back at the presentation to see what the biggest and craziest announcements were.
One of the most surprising announcements that made everyone gasp was the exciting news that Metroid Prime 4 is in development for the Nintendo Switch. What’s even more surprising is that Retro Studios – the team behind the Metroid Prime series – is not developing this sequel for the Switch. But do not worry, because the game is still being developed by a talented new team with a longtime producer who oversaw the past Metroid Prime games. The only other news about the title that was announced is that Metroid Prime 4 will be exclusive for the Switch and that the release date is sometime beyond 2017. Whatever that means.
ROCKET LEAGUE FOR SWITCH
Everyone’s favorite car soccer multiplayer game is finally coming to the Nintendo Switch. Rocket League takes everything you know about sports games and twists it on its head. Control mini rocket cars as you and you team attempt to get an explosive soccer ball into your opponent’s goal. Sounds simple, right? Well it is, which is what makes Rocket League such a blast to play. The Switch version of Rocket League will support cross-platform play, meaning that you can connect with your PS4 and Xbox One friends. The port will also feature exclusive cars and customization option just for Nintendo’s system. Rocket League will thrust its way to the Switch come this holiday season.
CORE POKEMON GAME FOR SWITCH
After the announcement of Pokemon Ultra Moon and Ultra Sun last week during the Pokemon direct, fans were hoping that the Switch would be getting the much-rumored Pokemon Stars. It turned out that Nintendo had nothing to announce for the Switch besides the fact that Pokken Tournament DX was coming.
During Nintendo’s E3 Spotlight event, the Pokemon Company ended up having an ace in the hole to share with us. The Nintendo Switch is not only getting a new Pokemon game in the future, but that game will indeed be a main line entry in the Pokemon series. Meaning that the next generation of Pokemon (8th gen) might be leaving the 3DS family to start a new home on Nintendo’s new hybrid console.
The Pokemon Company did not mention a launch window, but they did say that the game is at least a year away, so there’s a chance that it can release in time for holiday 2018.
METROID: SAMUS RETURNS ANNOUNCED FOR 3DS
After seeing the announcement for Metroid Prime 4, there was almost nobody predicting that Nintendo would also show a 2D Metroid title for the Nintendo 3DS, let alone a remake of an older title. Metroid: Return of Samus is a re-imagining of the 1991 classic that came out for the Game Boy, Metroid II: Return of Samus. The new 3DS game adds upon the original title by making gameplay smoother and features updated visuals to match the 3DS’ graphical fidelity. Metroid: Return of Samus launches for the Nintendo 3DS on Sept. 15, 2017. Getting two separate Metroid announcements in one day was surely a big surprise for fans of the franchise.
