PlayStation President, Andrew House, Explains 4K Blu-Ray Absence from PS4 Pro

Does this pave the way for Xbox Scorpio?

Despite Sony’s announcement regarding the PS4 Pro being a machine built for 4K content, it appears that this is not the case as far as discs are concerned. Although Sony advocated the Blu-Ray feature with the PS3, it is now somewhat of a strange omission from the PlayStation 4 Pro. The announcement has left many fans confused regarding Sony’s direction, considering the latest system will not feature the latest line of technology.

In an interview with The Guardian, PlayStation President Andrew House has weighed in on the issue, explaining that the demand for streaming content falls in line more with the direction of the PS4. “Our feeling is that while physical media continues to be a big part of the games business, we see a trend on video towards streaming,” he stated. “Certainly with our user base, it’s the second biggest use case for people’s time on the system so we place more emphasis on that area.”

Microsoft was quick to capitalize on this news via their official Twitter account, sending out a tweet emphasising that the Xbox One S already features a UHD Blu Ray player, which seemingly gives the current Microsoft base model an advantage over Sony’s upcoming premium model. Sony also stressed that 4K streaming is still in early stages in a PS4 Pro FAQ, and that the likes of the new Netflix and Youtube apps are currently in development.

The PS4 Pro will be available on Nov. 10.
