Today Sony Interactive Entertainment President Jim Ryan talked about the relationship with Japanese developers with local outlet AV Watch.
Ryan argued the importance of pursuing a close relationship with Hapanese publishers mentioning that not only in the latest PlayStation 5 showcase, but also during the show in June, many games from Japan were presented. He also added that there are many more.
He admitted that many Japanese developers and publishers have been thinking about pursuing mobile as their primary platform five or six years ago, but in the past couple of years they have returned to consoles and especially to PlayStation. According to Ryan, this is an industry-level trend.
He also added that Sony continues to actively negotiate with major Japanese publishers to build a good relationship with them. PlayStation has a very good rapport with companies like Koei Tecmo, Square Enix, and Capcom. It has been a relevant strategic objective for Sony to have a close relationship with all Japanese publishers.
The latest PlayStation 5 showcase certainly included some relevant Japanese bombshells, like Final Fantasy XVI, Resident Evil Village, and Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition.
Japanese developers were a bit slow in embracing the PS4, and the fact that the console was launched locally several months later certainly didn’t help. This time around, Sony’s home turf is among the first countries getting its hands on the PS5.
