This sequel will be written by Orien Uziel, whose writing credits include 22 Jump Street, The Cloverfield Paradox, most recently, the upcoming Sonic The Hedgehog Movie.

With this announcement, it’s clear that Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have a great deal of confidence in the upcoming film. Enough confidence to begin working on a sequel over three months before the first releases.

In case you somehow missed it, Detective Pikachu is a live-action Pokémon movie starring Ryan Reynolds as a talking Pikachu who is, well, a detective. Justice Smith plays a Pokémon trainer who is searching for his lost father, with the unlikely help of Pikachu.

Late last year we got the first trailer for the movie, showing off the oddly realistic looking versions of everyone’s favorite Pokémon, including a rather disturbing Mr. Mime.

The first movie will release in theaters May 10. It’s is not yet known what time frame we can expect for the newly announced sequel to release, or what the movie will be about.
