The Princess Bride is a 1987 fantasy romance film that’s based on the 1973 novel of the same name. The film follows the story of a farmhand named Westley who goes off on a journey to rescue his true love, Princess Buttercup, from the clutches of the evil Prince Humperdinck. Along the way, he meets plenty of quirky characters who help him on his quest. While the film is set in the fictional country of Florin, some fans might be wondering where The Princess Bride was filmed.

In truth, most of the movie was shot across various locations in both Ireland and Great Britain. Some of these locations include:

  • Carl Wark, Sheffield, England
  • Burnham Beeches, Buckinghamshire, England
  • Cliffs of Moher, County Clare, Ireland (for the Cliffs of Insanity)
  • Cave Dale, Castleton, Derbyshire, England
  • Lathkill Dale where it meets Cales Dale (the ‘Battle of wits’ scene)
  • Bradley Rocks and Robin Hood’s Stride, Birchover, Derbyshire, England
  • Haddon Hall, Bakewell, Derbyshire, England
  • Penshurst Place, Kent, England

Meanwhile, production filmed the framing story scenes at Shepperton Studios in Surrey. Director Rob Reiner actually rented a house in England near where The Princess Bride was filmed. There, he would invite the cast over for meals and lighthearted get-togethers.
