While you’ll be able to clear most of the trees surrounding your first settlement from more or less the beginning of the game, Birch trees require a special tool you won’t have access to until later. Here’s how to cut Birch and Oak Trees down in Valheim so you can get Fine Wood.
How to Cut Birch Trees Down in Valheim
Put simply, chopping down Birch and Oak Trees requires a Bronze Axe, which is a tool you won’t be able to get until you have taken down Eikthyr, the very first boss.
That’s because Eikthyr gives you the Hard Antler, which is used to create an Antler Pickaxe. This is used to mine the resources necessary to make Bronze at the Forge.
We’ve actually written a detailed breakdown of how you go about making Bronze here.
How to Get Fine Wood Without a Bronze Axe
Now, there is actually a way to fell Birch and Oak Trees and acquire Fine Wood without a Bronze Axe, but it’s very finicky and takes a bit of time.
The method involves chopping down a Beech Tree with your Stone Axe and then rolling the logs into a Birch or Oak Tree, which slowly damages the tree until it breaks itself. From there, you can then roll the logs into each other until the break. You should actually find one or two Birch Trees laying on the ground near your settlement to get you started.
Again, this method is a bit tedious and time-consuming, but it does help you gain access to a bunch of weapons and useful items you would otherwise have to wait much longer to get.
