The Sims 4 Parenthood: How to Raise and Lower Empathy Easily

This article is over 7 years old and may contain outdated information

The Sims 4: Parenthood will let you shape your child sims’ future traits even more than before thanks to the character values introduced. Empathy is one of the five new values your sim parents will be able to instill in their young ones. Having high empathy will lead to the Compassionate trait, while having it low will lead to the Insensitive trait.

Raising Empathy

Here’s every single way to raise up your empathy:

  • Volunteering
  • Selecting certain Teachable Moments options
  • Selecting certain options during Volunteering or School opportunities
  • The Good trait as well as its social options
  • Playing Doctor
  • Using social options dealing with helping a sim cheer up (Calm Down, Cheer Up, Console)

The two fastest out of those are to volunteer as much as possible, and to spend a lot of time playing with the doctor toys.

Lowering Empathy

Meanwhile, here’s how you can lower your sims’ empathy:

  • Hitting a stuffed animal
  • Trolling teh Forums
  • Selecting certain Teachable Moments options
Selecting certain options during Volunteering or School opportunities
  • Negative social interactions (Being mean, yelling, fighting)
  • The Mean and Evil traits as well as their social options

For teachable moments and opportunities, keep an eye out for whatever sounds like it would make your sim child care more about others. An example is, if your sim parent is called from school that their child has won an award and your response is that it should be handed to him in front of the whole class… well, they’re going to lose a bit of empathy for others.
