How to Spot Mimics in Prey

Recommended Videos

Mimics are one of the first types of enemies you encounter in Prey, and while they’re aren’t exactly strong, they can prove to be quite deadly to inattentive wanderers. Mimics do what their namesake implies, they copy other items in the world in order to blend in with their surroundings. They’re so good that they don’t have any particular telltale markings when they transform, easily passing as random, day-to-day items such as coffee mugs, computers, chairs, books, and so much more. This ability makes them sort of terrifying as you never know when some inconspicuous item is going to try and claim your life. However, there are some things you can keep in mind that will help you spot these evil, little bastards. Let’s run through them.

Mimics Tend to Copy Common, Movable Things

While there are tons of large items scattered around the world, including large desks, whiteboards, and supercomputers, Mimics tend to only become things that you can pick up and are familiar in the respective area. If you’re in a conference room, they’re most likely to become chairs. If there are books strewn about, chances are one or two of them is a Mimic.

Mimics Tend to Be Out of Sorts Among Other Items in Prey

With the exception of things like mugs, these aliens tend to be tipped over and in the wrong place. They’re good at becoming things, but since they move so quickly and are just trying to transform before you can see them, they often are toppled over or lying on the ground.

Mimics Double Up

Mimics often become the first thing they see in a room, often times positioning themselves right next to the original. For instance, a desk will now have two chairs, there will be two mugs instead of one on a table, an abundance of phones in one place, etc. If you see more things then should logically exist, you’ve found a Mimic.

With these points in mind, you should find yourself slowly becoming a Typhon-spotting pro in Prey. For more on Prey, be sure to check out our wiki.
