As the first character you’ll play as in Odin Sphere Leifthrasir, Gwendolyn is a Valkyria who fights with a Psypher spear. This means that she uses a lot of rapid thrusting attacks, and you’ll have to be careful with how you aim your moves.
She is the daughter of the Demon Lord Odin, and she inherited the spear from her sister, Griselda, who passed away on the battlefield. Even though she’s a princess, Gwendolyn presents herself as a very lonely character who lacks companionship, especially after the death of her sister. Her relationship with her father is strained, even though she’s proven herself to be a worthy warrior who marches fearlessly into battle. Though it is obvious that she is a kind-hearted young woman, it is also clear that she has many inner doubts and struggles.
Skills
There are many skills available to Gwendolyn in Odin Sphere Leifthrasir, but I recommend that you pick two or three to focus your upgrade points on. Needle Strike is a particularly useful skill to have; it allows you to unleash a series of furious stabs that are thrust forward. This can come in very handy when you’re facing bosses, and trying to stagger them right before they can execute a powerful attack.
If you enjoy juggling enemies and performing air combos, I recommend pouring your Phozons into Rising Crescent. This move allows Gwendolyn to dole out repeated hits before performing a rising attack, which is perfect for starting an air chain. Of course, don’t forget to upgrade the Assault High passive ability as well. This will increase your damage dealt according to the number of hits in a chain, making it very useful for juggle combos.
If you want to play Gwendolyn as more of a ranged character, it’s a good idea to invest points into skills like Grid Smash, Blizzard, and Freeze Lance. These are skills designed to hit opponents who are standing a distance away from you, or to push them back. If you wish to upgrade these ice-based skills, be sure to upgrade the Ice Breaker passive ability, which will increase damage against Frozen foes. Once you’ve hit your enemies with your ice attacks, hit them with physical moves to pile on the damage.
Abilities
For Gwendolyn’s abilities, here are the basics you should pick up as soon as you have enough points: Recovery Up, Charge Up, and Power Supply. These are all tier 2 and 3 abilities, so you can grab them pretty early in the game. These abilities will ensure that you’ll always have enough POW for skill usage, as well as keeping your health high should you be forced to eat your food in the middle of the battle.
For offensive abilities, Counter Guard and Shield Bash are particularly useful for people who enjoy blocking. These abilities allow you to increase your damage output right after blocking an attack. If you’re not a fan of blocking attacks, be sure to go for Backstab and Aerial Force. These are abilities that increase your damage whenever you hit enemies from behind, or in the air.
If you’ve got enough ability points left before the end of Gwendolyn’s campaign, feel free to go for Skull Bash too. This gives you a chance of inflicting the Dizzy effect onto opponents right after a successful block.
