This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Every once in a while, Sony will release an update for the PlayStation 4’s system software. These don’t tend to bring any new functionality to your system, but if you want to play the latest games, or just have your console online, you’ll need to get these updates installed. In this guide, we’re going to talk you through how to update system software on PS4 in a step-by-step fashion.

  3. Select ‘System Software Update’ from about halfway down this menu.

  4. If there’s a software update to download for your PS4, it will recommend downloading the update now.

  5. Once the PS4 software update has been downloaded, your system will need to restart while it’s applied.

Give it five minutes and your PS4 will be all updated and ready for you to keep on playing.

You’ll know that you’ve successfully managed to update your PS4’s system software, as you should have a Notification on your console informing you that the latest update was successfully installed.

Additionally, if you return to the System Software Update option from the system settings, it’ll now check for an update and inform you that you’ve got the latest system software currently available. If there’s another update to do, it’ll recommend you start the update process over again. This can happen if you’ve not used your PS4 in a while.

Other than that, it’s simply a case of waiting for the update to download, and then letting your PS4 install it. Depending on your internet speed, the system software update may take a little bit to download, but they’re never huge files so you shouldn’t be waiting any longer than an hour.

That’s everything you need to know to download system software updates on PS4. If you’re looking for more tips and tricks, be sure to search for Twinfinite for all of your video game guide needs.
