Astral Chain

Combat Astral Chain Bayonetta Nier

Since this is a list of games similar to NieR Automata, of course we’re going to mention other action games that come from the same developer, PlatinumGames. Astral Chain is a brand new property from the Japanese studio and released on the Nintendo Switch in 2019 as an exclusive and we here at Twinfinite liked it… a lot.

From the flashy cel-shaded art style to the unique and stylish combat, Astral Chain is the definition of cool and if you like anime even just a little bit, you’ll find something to enjoy in Astral Chain.

And also, there are cats in the game that act as a sort of collectible… so that’s neat.

Bayonetta 1 + 2

When you think about the best action games of all time, it’s hard not to think about Bayonetta. She has really high heels, two loaded pistols, and she can fight with her hair –come on, you cannot tell me that that’s not cool.

Bayonetta’s combat is very similar to Devil May Cry’s as it relies heavily on juggling your foes and going for those high combos. By using all of her assets to the best of your ability, you’ll be knocking out demons in no time flat.

Bayonetta 2 does a great job at improving upon the combat and turns the dial up a notch on the wacky story and the characters from the previous game, making it a very good sequel. You may not get to play as multiple characters like you do in NieR Automata but do you really need anyone else besides Bayonetta?

You can definitely finish both of those games pretty quickly as they’re not too long while we wait for Bayonetta 3, whenever that game decides to come out.

Bayonetta 2 is only available on the Switch and Wii U right now but you can still play the first one on PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Switch.

Devil May Cry 5

As someone who jumped into and fully completed Devil May Cry 5 without much prior knowledge of Capcom’s hack and slash series, I can tell you that I had no damn idea what the heck was going on in the story but once I got accustomed to the three distinct combat styles of the main protagonists, I was hooked.

When you mix in the catchy rock soundtrack that includes a song like Devil Trigger with the multitude of weapons and abilities, actually playing DMC5 just feels really, really good and satisfying. Each character feels different from the last and when you sit back to think about it, it’s basically three totally separate campaigns.

DMC5 will make you feel like a total badass throughout its wild story and once it comes to an end, you’re going to wish there was more to see.

Code Vein

One way to describe Code Vein is “anime Dark Souls” but that hollow description doesn’t even come close to truly describing how excellent this gothic and gory action game really is.

The over-the-top combat feels very weighty and thanks to the high amount of customization options, it really gives the player a lot to work with. And while it can be complex at first, the enemies are pretty easy towards the beginning of the story so it’s easy to get a grasp on everything before the difficult, Dark Souls-esque gameplay kicks in.

And just like NieR Automata, Code Vein has a fantastic story that is surprisingly deep and compelling for what it is.
