Destiny 2

Destiny 2 is the obvious answer. Being developed by the same team that created the early Halo games, it should be no surprise that Destiny 2 is similar in terms of gameplay.

Fast paced, tight, first-person shooting is combined with a sci-fi setting. The act of taking out the many races that call Destiny 2’s planets home feels so great due to how excellent the shooting mechanics are, but that’s exactly what you’d expect from Bungie.

Where the two franchises differ, however, is in their structures. While Destiny 2 has a single player campaign in the style of Halo’s, which is story focused and linear, it’s primarily a shared world, loot-based experience.

You can play the crucible with friends, which is like the multiplayer offering in Halo, but most of your time in Bungie’s new series will see you exploring the worlds, taking part in events and upgrading gear.

It may be a more open experience, but Halo and Destiny 2 are close in terms of gameplay and overall feel.

Titanfall 2

The original Titanfall chose to focus on multiplayer action, throwing players (pilots) into huge arenas to battle it out with giant mechs. The sequel added a single-player campaign on top of that, and it’s one of the best of recent years.

While Titanfall 2 is set in a world where soldiers are quick, agile, and have access to giant robot fighters, it’s not as sci-fi based as Halo. Enemies are human and weapons are more standard than the pulsating rifles and swords of the Xbox exclusive.

That being said, the sheer pace of the game and the design of the single player makes it similar to Halo in a few ways.

For a series that was initially so set on the idea of big multiplayer battles, it’s surprising that the campaign is so character driven, much like many of the Halo games are.

Also, since it is developed by Respawn, the shooting still feels wonderful, no matter the size of your soldier. If you’re craving a quality first-person shooter campaign on PS4, look no further than Titanfall 2.

Doom

bethesda

Doom is certainly on the more brutal and bloody end of the first-person shooter scale. Rather than blasting aliens away with swords and space rifles.

Doom is more about running face first into the action, blasting demons away with the most powerful shotgun you can find.

It’s the gameplay’s pace and sci-fi setting of Doom that make it similar to Halo. Doom all takes place at a sprint. You’re running from location to location, picking up everything you can find and bashing in every skull that gets in your way.

Crazy weapons also play a big part in Doom, with you slowly being given more powerful weapons as you progress.

The online component is far from as robust as it has been in Halo over the years, with single-player being the focus instead. If you’re looking for a fast paced but darker first-person shooter, then Doom will be perfect.

Killzone: Shadow Fall

Killzone

PlayStation’s own exclusive first-person shooter series may have been running since 2004, but it’s never been as popular as the Halo series, even with is fair share of critical acclaim.

In terms of design, the two series are pretty similar, though. Powerful weapons in a futuristic setting, complimented by a robust multiplayer offering.

Where the games differ, however, is in how they feel to play. Killzone: Shadown Fall, which was a PS4 launch title, feels heavier than Halo. Characters move more slowly, and while they’re able to leap and slide around the battlefield, often feel imposing.

If you’re used to the fast-paced action of Halo and Call of Duty, Killzone might take a little bit of getting used to, but the game is very well designed, both online and off, and it can be a lot of fun.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare

call of duty, infinite warfare, ps4

Infinite Warfare is far from the best Call of Duty, even having the most disliked trailer ever when it was first revealed, but it’s the closest you’re likely to find to the Halo series within Call of Duty.

Of course, it’s still serviceable due to always top notch Call of Duty gameplay, and honestly, you’ll likely enjoy any game in the series if you’re a Halo fan, but the over-the-top jet-pack movement in Infinite Warfare makes it even faster than usual.

Infinite Warfare is also a rare foray into space for the series. Due to Earth running out of natural resources, much of the human race has relocated to space, so you’re fighting across the Solar System.

Far away space stations, powerful space ships, and zero-gravity gun fights are all things you’l encounter. It’s certainly a departure from the series’ norm, but it brings more similarities to the Halo series than you’d usually find.
