Is Fallout 76 Crossplay Compatible?

Fallout 76 marks many firsts for the series. In addition to taking players to the eastern state of West Virginia for the first time, it also tasks them with teaming up with one another through online multiplayer to reclaim the wasteland and put civilization back on track. Being multiplatform, one might wonder if they can play together with players on other consoles, so today we’re here to let you know if Fallout 76 is crossplay compatible.

The short and simple answer is no, Fallout 76 is not crossplay compatible. This was confirmed by Bethesda marketing chief Pete Hines in a Tweet made in September, and also clarified if there were any plans to add it in moving forward.

“Fallout 76 does not support cross play, for a number of reasons,” Hines wrote. “I have no idea if it ever will. But I assure you it is not on our radar right now as we focus on B.E.T.A. and Launch.”

There are a number of potential reasons for this, but the most pressing one seems to be the company’s need to work out issues with cross platform play for The Elder Scrolls: Legends, a title which has crossplay deeply ingrained in its design.

“Fallout 76, sure: it would be nice if I could play on my Xbox and my kid is playing on his PC and we can play together, but if we can’t, OK,” Hines said in an interview with Eurogamer. “There’s lots of games – I play Overwatch on Xbox and he plays on PC separately and has a whole separate account. It’s not critical.”

“But for Legends it’s absolutely critical,” he continued, “both cross play, which is how Legends works right now on every device – you’re playing against somebody who could be on any device – and, more importantly, cross-platform progression, which means no matter what you do on any platform, you load up the game and so long as you’re logged in, here is all your progression, here is everything you had, everything you were doing.”

Should any form of crossplay compatibility be announced for Fallout 76 at some point post-launch, we will update this guide appropriately.

That does it for whether Fallout 76 is crossplay compatible. Fallout 76 is set for release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on Nov. 14, 2018.
