So you start up a fight in the latest Dissidia game and you’re just wailing on your opponent. You’re completely beating the snot out of them. Yet, for whatever reason they aren’t going down. What’s the deal? Well, Bravery is the deal. What is that, you may ask? Just the one of the central mechanics of Dissidia Final Fantasy NT, and here’s everything you need to know about it.

First and foremost, you need to understand that there are two types of attacks in any given Dissidia game: HP Attacks and Bravery Attacks. HP Attacks, surprise, take away your opponent’s HP. Bravery Attacks take away their Bravery instead. Bravery in Dissidia Final Fantasy NT is represented by a number over any character’s health bar and this is basically how much damage your next HP attack will do. You have 2500 Bravery? Your next HP attack will do 2500 damage. Easy, right?

The downside to this, however, is that whenever you do land an HP attack your Bravery gets reset to 0; and should you get hit and go below 0 you get what’s called a Break. During this time you cannot do any damage, HP or otherwise. Whereas your opponent who broke you just got a huge boost to their Bravery and will almost certainly be coming to land an HP attack on you.

There are two ways to get out of a Bravery Break in Dissidia Final Fantasy NT. The first is to just wait a bit as your Bravery naturally restores itself to its default number. The other is to land an HP attack, which will reset you immediately. Knowing when to flee to let it replenish or when to go on the offensive will be important.

Characters will only have one HP attack at a time so it’ll be pretty easy to know what to expect with that, but Bravery attacks act a lot more like traditional fighting game moves. Each character has a total of seven at their disposal in Dissidia Final Fantasy NT, mixing together directional inputs with whether or not you’re in the air. To best utilize your attacks you’ll need to quickly learn your character’s move set and how it can be used for combos.

Basically, what this all translates to is battles in Dissidia NT are contests of managing your Bravery while trying to whittle down your opponent’s as much as possible before landing that ever important HP attack. Ideally, you want to Break your opponent so you can get a ton of Bravery all at once and have them almost helpless, but it’s also important not to get too greedy. If an opponent is constantly knocking your numbers down whenever you build them up you may be better off going for lesser HP attacks to slowly bring their health down instead of aiming for one or two big attacks.

How you manage this particular stat will be the most important part of Dissidia Final Fantasy NT. Knowing when to go for it, when to play it safe, summon, call for an ally, or use a skill is important. There are tons of different ways to increase or decrease it in Dissidia Final Fantasy NT. You’re going to want to experiment to see what best suits your play style, but these are the basics on everything you need to know about this significant gameplay mechanic for now.
