As you’ll likely know if you’ve played any Borderlands game before, or pretty much any open world action game for that matter, you unlock skill points by getting EXP and leveling up.

If you’ve done so and have a skill point unused, you’ll be notified by a message at the bottom of your screen.

Where to Spend Skill Points in Borderlands 3

To actually use any skill points you have, press the touchpad if you’re on PS4 (View button if you’re on Xbox One) to go to the game’s player menu. Here, you’ll be able to cycle across to the skills menu by pressing R1/RB.

You’ll then be able to cycle through your skill trees and press X/A to invest your skill points. Be sure to check through all the skill options first before you spend your points though, because there are some great once to prioritize.

Each skill has a different point at which you can max them out, ranging from one to five points, and when you’ve hit five points in a line of skills in one part of a tree, you’ll unlock the next line for you to spend more points on when you get them.

You are also able to respec your skills by heading to any Quick-Change Machine and selecting the ‘Respec’ option there.

You’re then able to reset the points you’ve spent, allowing you to build your character in a new way. The cost to respec your character depends on the level of your character and the number of skill points you’ve been pouring into your loadout.

Even then, as long as you’ve been hoovering up cash as you play through, it should never be too expensive for you to afford.

In short,

  1. Enter the menu with the touchpad or View button and cycle across to the Skills tab.

  2. Press X/A to spend a skill point on what you want, unlocking more in a tree when you’ve spend five in one line.
