How to Get Gem Shards & What They Do in BELOW

If you’re going to make your way to the bottom of the cave in BELOW, you’re going to need gem shards and know exactly what they’re used for. That’s exactly what we’re going to address in this guide. Here’s how to get gem shards and what they do in BELOW.

How to Get Gem Shards

Gem Shards are actually pretty easy to come across in BELOW. Simply defeat any of the red enemies you come across in the cave, and more often than not they’ll drop gem shards. When dropped by enemies, these are small white glowing dots that you can simply walk over to pick up.

As you might have gathered, gem shards are pretty darn handy for lighting your way in BELOW, but we’ll run you through all of their uses below.

What Gem Shards Are Used for in BELOW

  • Dropped to emit light in the nearby area.
  • Used to power your lantern to reveal traps, secret areas, and open locked passages.
  • Fortifying a campfire that you can teleport to from campfires you discover later on in BELOW.

Gem Shards, as we’ve previously mentioned, are namely used to emit a soft light to illuminate your surrounding area at the cost of one shard. This can be helpful for particularly dark areas of the cave in BELOW, as you can see below. To drop these, simply press down on the d-pad on Xbox One.

However, their main use is to power your lantern, which can create a bright circle of light around the player, reveal traps and secret areas, and open locked passages.

To do this, simply press and hold LB on Xbox One in order to channel the power of your lantern, and use the right analog stick in order to direct the beam of light at the trap or secret passage you want to reveal or pass through.

While this is likely going to be your primary use for these shards in BELOW, they do have one final use, and it’s arguably one of the most useful tools to have at your disposal on your descent into the darkness.

Upon reaching a campfire, you’ll be able to fortify these with a blue light. This creates a teleport point that players can return to from any campfire they come across further on in their adventure. Essentially, it’s a handy checkpoint to stop you from getting rekt and going right back to the start if you fail.

To fortify a campfire and create a teleport point, you’ll need 25 shards. Once you’ve got enough, simply walk over to the campfire, press A on Xbox One to interact with it, and then select the option on the right of the options that appear. It looks like a diamond rune-like shape and will be red if you don’t have the 25 shards available and white if you do. Press A with this highlighted, and you’ll be able to fortify the campfire.

Any future campfire you then come across, simply press A once again to interact with it and you’ll be able to teleport back to the previous campfire.

That’s all you need to know on how to get gem shards in BELOW and what they’re used for. For more tips, tricks, and guides on the game, be sure to search for Twinfinite.
