During the very first section of Gears of War 4’s prologue, you’ll be taking on a mission in Aspho Fields. If you’re playing through the campaign on the Insane difficulty, then you’ll be able to get access to a pretty special gun. Once you’ve ran through some blast doors, you’ll see a garage door slowly closing. Make it inside here and look for the weapon called Despicable You.

Equip this and you’ll now be able to freeze your enemies. Shoot them once with any other weapon to see them explode in a bloody mess. Delightful!

Crazy Chair Yelling

Gears of War 4

When you’re making your way through the museum later on in the campaign, Act 3 Chapter 3 specifically, you’ll see a bunch of chairs and tables by some windows in a hallway. All you need to do is run through these as JD and knock them all over.

If you do it correctly, JD will start screaming and yelling at the chaos he is bringing to the furniture world. He’ll laugh off his silly behavior and then return to taking down the Swarm… as you do.

Carmine

The Carmine brothers are a long-standing joke in the Gears of War world. For one reason or another, they just seem to meet death much sooner than they really should be doing. While many were wondering if we’d see a Carmine in Gears of War 4, The Coalition ensured you wouldn’t be disappointed.

When you arrive at the outsider village in act 1, you’ll hear Reyna shout “Carmine,” as the a machine gun turret makes light work of a helicopter flying in. Yep, Carmine has made a badass comeback. The only problem is, it doesn’t last too long and he soon gets taken out in a huge explosion. Welp!

The Maria Tombstones

gears of war 4

During Act 2 when you’ve returned to JD’s family home, you’ll start fighting your way through a graveyard. If you look closely enough, dotted around you’ll see tombstones which spell out MARIA. If you shoot all of these in order, and there are still some enemies left on the map, all of them will be taken care of for you by a mysterious red glowing light and a dense fog. However, that’s not everything.

If you make your way over to the light, it will start moving over toward the stairs. Once in place, you’ll hear the audio from when Dom found his beloved Maria in Gears of War 2. A touching tribute to the fallen couple.

Tomato Grenades

Gears of War 4

In Act 2 of Gears of War 4’s campaign once again, you’ll find yourself fighting through Marcus’ greenhouse. He’ll complain that the shootout is ruining all of his “god damn tomatoes,” but that’s not the end of the joke. Once you’ve taken care of the threat, go ahead and seek out any remaining tomatoes that haven’t yet been destroyed and do exactly that.

If you got them all, Marcus will lose his shit screaming like a mad man about how he’ll never get that tomato sauce right ever again. He’ll also call a former Delta squad member a rather horrible name. On your way out, you should see a new tomato plant sprout up. Head over to it and you’ll be able to grab some tomato grenades that explode red sauce when detonated.

The Piano Soundtrack

Gears of War 4

When you’re in the Fenix household and you’re trying to escape the COG ambush, look out for a piano before you start heading down the stairs. If you head over to it, you should find that you can interact with it. The tune that starts playing might sound a little familiar to long-term fans of the series.

Yes, The Coalition added the original soundtrack to the very first game in the series. A nice little nod to the game that started it all off.

Leviathan

If you’ve played Gears of War 4’s multiplayer a lot, you may have fought it out on the Harbor map. It can be done on any game mode of your choosing, but you’ll need to shoot a number of statues in a specific order for the giant Leviathan to appear.

Once you’ve shot all of the different statues in the correct order, head to the middle of the map and look for the button that allows you to sound the horn. Look straight ahead and you should see the Leviathan leap out of the water for a short moment. If you want to find all of the locations, you can check out this video here.

Cole’s Celebration song

Gears of War 4

In Act 5 of Gears of War 4’s campaign, you’ll find yourself jumping into a giant mech as you battle your way through the hordes of Swarm. However, when you reach a specific point with a broken bridge, look out for the two trees off to one side that look a little bit like a Thrashball goal. You’ll conveniently find a car positioned on the side too just waiting to be kicked through it.

If you do manage to kick the car in between the two trees, you’ll active an easter egg of fireworks exploding and Cole’s celebration rap sounding off in the background. Turn around and you’ll also find that there’s a giant Thrashball for you to kick around, as well. Y’know, just in case you wanted a break from killing the waves of Swarm.

JDF Tree

Gears of War 4

For this one, we’re returning to your family home again. During Act 2 when you first arrived at the Fenix household and are walking through the garden, look for a tall tree standing relatively near to the main building. If you look closely, you should see the initials JDF engraved into the tree.

This is a brief easter egg referring to JD growing up there. His initials stand for James Dominic Fenix, a little reference in themselves to Marcus’ best friend and fallen brother, Dom Santiago.

Anya’s Grave

Gears of War 4

In the exact same area that you just found the tree with JD’s initials on, you’ll be able to find an iron gate in the corner of the garden. Head over to this and head on through. By doing so, you’ll activate an easter egg cutscene that will show JD visiting the grave of his mother, Anya Stroud.

It’s actually quite a touching cutscene that shows JD laying down his weapon and just spending a little time visiting his deceased mother’s grave.
