Fallout 4 wowed players when it released late last year. The open world, post-apocalyptic RPG brought players to a Boston Wasteland in search of family. The living world, customizable towns, and lovable characters made for one of the best games of 2015. Now, five months later, Bethesda is ready to release the first major expansion for the game: Automatron.
Robots are inbound, and it’s time for you to do what you do best. Kill them, take them apart, collect pieces, and a whole lot more. There’s a lot going into Automatron, and all of it is interesting. Here’s everything you need to know about the Commonwealth’s newest threat.
Story

There’s a new bad guy in town, and this one is known as the Mechanist. Who the Mechanist is and what its end goal is will require a bit of sleuthing on your part. But you’ll have to deal with the horde of robots that have been released first.
These aren’t your typical Synths, Protectrons, or anything else you’ve seen before; these are some badass hunks of metal roaming around. These are some fighting bots with different weapons and abilities. You’ll have to use the best gear you’ve got if you want to survive the mechanical onslaught that Automatron will throw at you.
Can You Participate if You Just Got the Game?
While going up against a homicidal army of bots would make for a great first endeavor in Fallout 4, you’d probably die instantly. Because of that, the activities of Automatron are for players who are level 15 or higher.
Don’t look at it as a level gate, though. Look at it as an opportunity to become acquainted with Boston and its inhabitants, as well as a chance to stock up on weapons, supplies, and skills. Once you hit level 15, you’ll be able to use new weapons (like the Lightning Chain Gun), earn new abilities, and more.
New Companions
Bethesda has done a whole lot more than just give you some pre-defined new companion. There are already 13 to find in Fallout 4, so the developers decided to mix things up a bit for Automatron. Players will be able to get new buddies, only this time you’ll have to build them.
Yeah, you read that right, you’ll be able to build robot companions with powerful weapons, unique designs, paint jobs, personalities, and more. They’ll be able to join you on your adventures through the wasteland, making other challenging parts much more accessible. Better yet, you can build more than one.
Perhaps it’s time to start up that robot army you’ve always dreamed of…
How Does One Build Robots?
So you know you can build companions in Automatron now, and the excitement has washed away. Time to put things into action. So how does one start building robots? By hunting down the bad ones first, of course.
Remember that army the Mechanist sent after you? Kill them and collect their parts so that you can build some of your own. It’s that simple. Every robot will have unique parts and weapons, so you’ll have to really search if you’re looking for something specific.
You’ll need other resources as well, so don’t forego your regular scavenging. Make sure to drop off everything at one of your workshops and you’ll be good to go.
