What’s New in Final Fantasy XV’s Royal Edition & Upgrade? Everything You Need to Know

This article is over 6 years old and may contain outdated information

New Dungeon and Bosses

The main new feature in the Royal Edition comes with the Royal Pack, in the form of brand new content added onto the game. Warning, there are minor spoilers ahead for the game simply discussing where the new content is added on, but there won’t be any story details.

The most enticing piece of content coming with the Royal Pack comes with an entirely new dungeon added onto the very end of the game, when you’re exploring Insomnia. The Insomnia City Ruins as the dungeon is called will apparently add about 2-3 more hours of gameplay to the end of the game, along with a few new bosses to take down. The first one that we’ve seen in trailers is Cerberus, who Nyx and Libertus faced off against in the Kingsglaive movie. You’ll also get the chance to face-off against a new mechanical menace named Omega and the Rulers of Yore, bosses with a direct tie to the Kingdom of Lucis. There aren’t just new bosses, however, as story cutscenes have also been added in to help flesh out the story surrounding them that little bit more.

Based on the trailer, we know that Cor Leonis makes an appearance in the new endgame content, but we don’t know if any other characters will be appearing. This means that there’s a big incentive for old fans of Final Fantasy XV to jump into the new content, not just newcomers. The chance to see the gang in action once again is certainly tempting.

First Person Mode and Other New Features

The Insomnia City Ruins aren’t the only thing added on with the Royal Pack, and there’s even another area to explore. Early on in Final Fantasy XV, you take the Royal Vessel across the sea to Altissia. Now, the Royal Pack lets you take direct control of the ship and explore a bit of the sea on your way to the watery city. This results in new secrets, fishing spots, and recipes to uncover.

At the same time, a couple of smaller features have also been added into Final Fantasy XV, changing the way you can play. The most interesting of these is the first-person mode, letting you play the game from Noctis’ point of view. There’s also the Armiger Unleashed item, which significantly powers up the Armiger ability that Noctis can use, new trophies added on top of the standard list, as well as new ways to acquire the Regalia Type-D, the ridiculous off-road enhancement for the car. There’s quite a bit of new content added into Final Fantasy XV with the Royal Pack as you can see, even more content for an already huge game.

What Comes In the Royal Edition

Now there are two options for getting all of this new content, and the first is by picking up the Final Fantasy XV: Royal Edition (we’ll get to the other one soon). The Royal Edition costs $49.99 and can be purchased both physically and digitally. Of course, it comes with all of the aforementioned content included in the Royal Pack, and beyond that functions as a Game of the Year edition for FFXV.

You’ll also get access to a number of weapons and items, along with all of the DLC released for Final Fantasy XV so far. This means you get Episodes Gladio, Prompto, and Ignis, and the multiplayer expansion Comrades. Each of the three character episodes features a new kind of gameplay focused around that respective characters, and that translates to how they play in the main game with the character swapping feature added in the December update. If you haven’t jumped on board with Final Fantasy XV yet, now’s the perfect time if you’re interested. It should also be noted that the PC version of the game, Final Fantasy XV: Windows Edition, comes with everything that the Royal Edition does.

The Royal Pack and DLC Still to Come

For anyone that already owns the base version of Final Fantasy XV, the good news is that you don’t need to buy the Royal Edition. The bad news is that you will still need to shell out a few bucks. The Royal Pack will be available as a separate DLC for the game, running $15. Of course, it comes with all of the new features stated in the Royal Edition above, but you won’t get the existing DLC or Season Pass content in this one. Surprisingly, the Royal Pack also won’t be the final piece of DLC coming for Final Fantasy XV.

There are four more character episodes planned for the game, similar to the three already released. We know that one of these episodes will focus on the game’s villain Ardyn, but the others are anyone’s guess. These episodes will carry into the beginning of 2019, meaning Final Fantasy XV will still be receiving new content over two years after release. It also just so happens that the game’s director recently asked fans if they’d want to see a super happy or super sad alternate ending, so who knows what else we might see.
