Janina Gavankar as Iden Versio – Star Wars Battlefront 2
Best Video Game Voice Actors of Q4 2017
Star Wars has received a wealth of new characters recently with Rebels and the new films, and Battlefront 2 adds yet another into the series’ canon. Janina Gavankar, who some might recognize as Luna from True Blood, plays the role of Iden Versio, an elite Imperial Commando and leader of Inferno Squad. Iden has spent her whole life in the Imperial army and her die-hard loyalty to the Empire rings true. Gavankar does a great job of portraying the hard soldier that Versio is, then effortlessly switches the role up as her perception of the Empire is shattered.
Star Wars Battlefront 2’s campaign may be short, but the main crux of the story is Versio’s growth as a person. A lot of that is due to the impressive performance from Gavankar, who easily stands out above the rest of the cast.
Abubakar Salim as Bayek – Assassin’s Creed Origins
Best Video Game Voice Actors of Q4 2017
Assassin’s Creed has no shortage of memorable heroes, yet Bayek easily stands up with the best of them. Bayek is a Medjay of Egypt, a servant of the Pharaoh dedicated to protecting and helping the citizenry around the land. Assassin’s Creed Origins does things a little differently, as we don’t see Bayek’s rise to power and training, but rather we start his story after he’s been an established and powerful Medjay.
He’s an interesting well-rounded character, and Abubakar Salim does a good job of portraying that. Bayek cares about the people of Egypt and has a kind heart, always willing to help someone in need. At the same time though, his heart is filled with vengeance for the death of his son, and he’s not afraid to kill anyone that stands in his path. This duality is portrayed well by Salim, who lends the character both a kind and deadly personality. As a debut role in video games, he’s done one hell of a job.
Kirsty Mitchell as Morag – Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Best Video Game Voice Actors of Q4 2017
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 has a diverse cast of characters, from the young starry-eyed youth Rex to the commanding military woman Morag. The latter is a fascinating character and easily one of the strongest in the entire game. Morag’s role in the story is complex, and she shifts sides partway through the game. She’s a very stoic character due to the harsh military life she leads. Morag’s thick Scottish accent also helps her stand out, even in a cast filled with accents.
Kirsty Mitchell does an admirable job of portraying the strong military woman that Morag is. There’s emotion that creeps into the character as you get to know her better, even as she tries to keep up her hard facade. You might recognize Mitchell from the recent film Hitman’s Bodyguard, where she played Harr.
Kylie Brown as Rachel Amber – Life is Strange: Before the Storm
Best Video Game Voice Actors of Q4 2017
Life is Strange has a whole cast of now-beloved characters, but we’ve all been waiting to get to know Rachel Amber. Before the Storm didn’t disappoint, shining a light on the complex relationship between her and Chloe. Rachel is one of the most popular girls at Blackwell Academy, choosing friends virtually however she wants. She and Chloe, however, develop a complex relationship, and we start to see the cracks beneath Rachel’s “popular girl” portrayal. She’s going through huge amounts of family trouble, having problems figuring out her place in the world and what she wants to do, and feeling angry about a lot of different things.
Kylie Brown lends her voice to the character and does a great job filling Rachel with emotion and teenage angst. It’s fascinating seeing a character we only heard rumors and reports about in the original Life is Strange develop and evolve over time. As it turns out, Rachel is much more interesting than we even thought in the first game.
Brian Bloom as BJ Blazkowicz – Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus
Best Video Game Voice Actors of Q4 2017
Brian Bloom did a phenomenal job of portraying a new BJ in Wolfesntein: The New Order, a quiet and solemn hero resolute in his ideals and unafraid of resorting to violence for the greater good. In The New Colossus, BJ has been broken and battered even more, giving us a shattered hero who still has to trudge on and fight for what’s right. Bloom’s portrayal of the character is even more resonant this time around, as we see more of BJ’s history and the actor injects humor, wit, and emotion at almost every turn.
This is easily one of the standout performances of the entire year, and the motion capture work within The New Colossus does a wonderful job of making BJ even more relatable and tragic.
Josh Duhamel as TSgt. William Pierson – Call of Duty: WW2
Best Video Game Voice Actors of Q4 2017
Call of Duty finally returned to its roots this year with WW2, and along with that came a dramatic campaign focusing on a group of American soldiers in the European Front. Josh Duhamel, who you’ve probably seen in Transformers, plays Tech Sergeant William Pierson, the leader of your squad. Pierson is a calculating and strict commander, down to the point of almost being a jerk at times. However, as the campaign plays out you see how much he truly cares for his men and why he acts the way he does.
Duhamel lends his gravitas to the character in WW2, giving Pierson that military air that the actor does so well. He’s one of the most memorable characters of the game and helps lead the charge countless times.
Alix Wilton Regan as Aya – Assassin’s Creed Origins
Best Video Game Voice Actors of Q4 2017
Bayek may take center stage for most of Assassin’s Creed Origins, but his wife Aya is just as important. Aya works as a second protagonist for the game, and she’s just as vengeful of her son’s death as Bayek. She works to take down multiple targets responsible for the act, just like her husband, all while working her way into Cleopatra’s inner circle. Alex Wilton Regan lends her voice to the characters, helping to portray a strong woman who isn’t afraid of confrontation.
Aya is incredibly smart and although she’s loyal to Cleopatra at first, she isn’t blinded by that loyalty. She and Bayek share an intense bond and she’d do anything to help him, just like he would her. Regan makes Aya come alive, creating one of the most interesting central characters in Assassin’s Creed Origins.
Katie Cassidy as Becky Marney – Hidden Agenda
Best Video Game Voice Actors of Q4 2017
Hidden Agenda is the latest title from Until Dawn developer Supermassive Games. It focuses on homicide detective Becky Marney and district attorney Felicity Graves, the former of which is the stronger-willed of the two, putting herself in danger multiple times while trying to solve the case of the serial killer known as The Trapper. Becky Marney is played by Katie Cassidy, known for her role as Laurel on Arrow.
Cassidy does a great job of inserting herself into the role, both through voice acting and motion capture. This lends to the character really feeling like the actress is playing her, and it’s a convincing take on portraying a homicide detective. Marney is a likable, strong-willed character, making it all the more important to make the right decisions to ensure she stays alive.
