It’s that time of the year again. Steam is back with its winter sale of 2017, and it’s full of some pretty great deals that you’re not going to want to miss out on. The deals available now are pretty attractive, with Left 4 Dead 2 (always a goodie) priced at just $2 and Rainbow Six Siege only costing $10. We’ve picked out 10 of the best winter sale deals on Steam right now, and you won’t want to miss out on these.
Stardew Valley
Best Steam Winter Sale 2017 Deals
Starting us off is Stardew Valley, which originally released for PC just last year, and quickly made its way to consoles. It also released on Switch earlier this year. If, for some reason, you haven’t played Stardew Valley yet, now’s the perfect time to do so. Developed solely by Eric Barone (though he now has support from Chucklefish), the game takes many cues from the Harvest Moon series and its older entries.
Players will create a male or female farmer who tends to their crops and livestock, and also socializes with the townsfolk to form genuine bonds and maybe even a romantic relationship. The whole game is all about saving this cute little town from the evil corporation Joja Mart, but the gameplay mechanics are a lot deeper than you might initially think.
Stardew Valley features all the usual Harvest Moon elements like farming, fishing, and foraging. But it also features actual combat where you delve into a mine and fight monsters for rare materials. There’s so much to do in this game, and so many secrets to uncover. It’s the perfect game to play during the winter, where you’re all huddled up at home, plugging away at this cozy and inviting little farming sim.
Assassin’s Creed Origins
Best Steam Winter Sale 2017 Deals
Assassin’s Creed Origins gets a pretty nice discount during this Steam winter sale as well, with a hefty 30% discount. It’s certainly not the cheapest game you’ll find during this winter sale, but for a triple-A title that launched just two months ago? It’s certainly a steal.
In our review, we praised Origins for being such a breath of fresh air as compared to its predecessors. The series takes us the furthest back in the timeline we’ve ever been, where we get to witness the formation of the Brotherhood. Taking control of an Egyptian Medjay, Bayek, players will get to roam around Ancient Egypt as they do all sorts of Ubisoft open-world things like taking leaps of faith, hiding in haystacks while waiting to assassinate people, and helping regular citizens with their tedious problems.
What’s so impressive about Origins is the breathtaking reconstruction of Ancient Egypt itself. This is the largest Assassin’s Creed game to date, and you can just tell how much attention to detail Ubisoft and its team of historians have put into recreating this fascinating and monumental time period of human history. Come for blade stabbing, stay for the virtual tourism.
Wolfenstein II
Best Steam Winter Sale 2017 Deals
Wolfenstein II is yet another great steal for gamers looking to expand their library during this Steam winter sale. Even though it was also released just two months ago, the game is already seeing a massive 50% discount on Steam. We really enjoyed our time with Wolfenstein II, as its strong narrative proved to be one of the best we’d seen in video games all year.
The game picks up directly after the ending of the first game, where players must take control of BJ Blaskovicz to rid the world of Nazis during an alternate version of a post-WWII world. The gunplay is pretty solid as well, and while it may not be the best shooter or action game of 2017, it gets the job done, and is certainly a must-have if you’re looking for new games to pick up this winter.
Grand Theft Auto V
Best Steam Winter Sale 2017 Deals
Though it’s been quite a few years since its original release back on the PS3 and Xbox 360, Grand Theft Auto V is still one of the best open-world games on the market right now. If you’re familiar with Rockstar’s outlandish series, you’ll know exactly what to expect from this one.
The single-player campaign is fun enough, with players having the ability to jump between three different characters at any point in time. With each character having their own personal backstories and story threads to follow, Grand Theft Auto V actually succeeds at making the story feel varied and much more dynamic. The heist missions are a ton of fun as well, and are easily some of the best set pieces we’ve seen in the series.
GTA Online’s community is still going strong, with Rockstar regularly pushing out content for the game. If you haven’t played Grand Theft Auto V, this one’s a no-brainer.
The Witcher III: Wild Hunt – Game of the Year Edition
Best Steam Winter Sale 2017 Deals
Speaking of good open-world games out on the market, The Witcher III: Wild Hunt – Game of the Year Edition is on sale yet again, this time with a huge 60% discount. Even if you’ve already played the game on consoles, if you’ve yet to experience the expansions, and you have a nice PC rig that can handle the game, you should certainly consider picking this up during the winter sale.
And for newcomers, The Witcher III is actually a pretty good entry point into the series as you don’t really need a lot of prior knowledge to understand what’s going on. The Witcher III was one of our favorite games of 2015 because of how alive the game world felt. No side quest felt tacked on, and every NPC you could interact with had some purpose to them. If you can forgive the pretty darn clunky combat (at least on normal difficulty), this is a really solid and immersive RPG you can easily sink a hundred hours into.
It also features Gwent the card game. Personally, I think the rules are a little flawed, but people seem to be obsessed with it, so you might enjoy it as well.
Dark Souls III
Best Steam Winter Sale 2017 Deals
Bloodborne notwithstanding, Dark Souls III is easily one of the best action games we’ve played in years, rivaled only by Nioh, which released earlier in 2017. Say what you want about the game’s slightly infuriating PvP connection issues and the whole poise drama, Dark Souls III is the perfect bookend to a marvelous trilogy of fantasy action games.
From Software has tweaked and refined the combat so it doesn’t feel quite as slow as its two predecessors did, but also not as frenetic as its cousin Bloodborne. Dark Souls III is a nice balance between the two formulas, and it just feels so good to control. Set in the fantasy world of Lothric this time around, Dark Souls III features an impeccably designed and largely interconnected world that will have you marveling at how everything fits together. It’s not quite as vertical as the original Dark Souls’ Lordran, but it’s still impressive nonetheless.
The game allows for complete customization over your character, with a staggering amount of melee weapons, sorcerer staffs, cleric chimes, shields, and armor for you to play around with. With an insane 75% discount on Steam right now, Dark Souls III is an absolute steal. The Deluxe Edition is discounted by 55%, and that comes packed with its two expansion packs if you’re inclined to go for the full package.
DOOM
Best Steam Winter Sale 2017 Deals
DOOM was hands down the best first-person shooter game we’d played in all of 2016, and it’s available at an attractive 55% off during this Steam winter sale.
The appeal of DOOM is having a sense of total control of your character, and being able to feel the weight of all their actions. It’s a very kinetic game that relies on the player having a good sense of their surroundings and movement, all while shooting evil demons in the face at the same time.
If the single-player campaign isn’t enough to satiate your bloodlust, the game comes packed with online multiplayer and a nifty map editor as well.
Tales of Berseria
Best Steam Winter Sale 2017 Deals
Tales of Berseria was possibly one of the most underrated and overlooked JRPG releases of 2017. Releasing at the start of the year, it was easily overshadowed by other bigger titles like Horizon Zero Dawn and Nioh. Even so, the game is now available at a cool 60% discount on Steam, and it’s definitely worth a look for fans of the genre.
Berseria is the darkest entry we’ve seen in the Tales series so far, and it starts off with a grim opening level, where we watch as the protagonist Velvet loses everything she cared about in her life. Things do get a little more lighthearted as you recruit new members to your party, but the overall tone of the game feels much more somber compared to the rest of the series. If you were put off by previous Tales games, this could be a good one to try.
Life Is Strange: Before the Storm – Deluxe Edition
Best Steam Winter Sale 2017 Deals
With the third episode out in the wild, now is the perfect time to jump into the emotional rollercoaster ride that is Life Is Strange: Before the Storm. The Deluxe Edition of the game is discounted by 30% during this winter sale, and it gives you access to the bonus Farewell episode that’s set to release in early 2018.
While many fans might have had some apprehension at the idea of a Life Is Strange prequel series being handled by the new developing studio Deck Nine, it’s safe to say that those concerns were entirely unwarranted. Deck Nine has consistently surprised us with how gripping and well-written Before the Storm is, and it gives us a fantastic personal look at Rachel Amber, who was such an enigma in the original series.
Before the Storm might not have any high stakes (y’know, like a tornado threatening to wipe out the whole town), but even without the supernatural elements, it’s still a very emotional and personal story that’s sure to grip you from start to finish.
Divinity: Original Sin 2
Best Steam Winter Sale 2017 Deals
Divinity: Original Sin 2 is probably the most immersive RPG we’ve played in 2017, and it’s now available at a 10% discount on Steam. Not the biggest discounter ever, we know. But at $40, you’ll be getting a massive RPG that you can easily sink hundreds of hours into.
Featuring tactical turn-based combat, Divinity is all about strategy and planning ahead. Players can make use of their environments to trap their enemies, and come up with all sorts of innovative methods to make them submit. Divinity takes a lot of cues from tabletop RPGs like DND, where your stats matter in everything you do (whether it’s initiative or persuasion checks), and there’s multiple ways of going about tackling a main or side quest. The characters themselves are written fantastically, and the voice work is crisp and really helps you to be engaged in the lore of this immersive world.
