DESTINY 2 – OFFICIAL LIVE ACTION TRAILER
Video game trailers have continually evolved over time, going from bit sized info dumps and action shots to more out there, engaging pieces of entertainment in their own right. Bigger budgets allow for live action set pieces and iconic soundtracks to rival some of the best movie equivalents, which is exactly what Destiny has become known for.
So it didn’t come as any surprise that for Destiny 2, Activision and Bungie pulled out all the stops for a massive campaign. The renewed sense of humor perfectly captured everyone’s favorite Nathan Fillion impersonator in action that had us shouting ‘for the puppies’ to the tune of Beastie Boys’ Sabotage. That, along with the previously amusing teasers, made Destiny 2’s advertising campaign one of the better implementations of the year.
LEGEND OF ZELDA: BREATH OF THE WILD – SWITCH JAN. 2017 PRESENTATION
Sometimes the best trailers are ones that hit you right in the feels, which is exactly what Nintendo’s much anticipated The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild did right at the start of the year. With the hype intensifying and a release just a few weeks away, Nintendo dropped the official story trailer that revisited some of the scenery that we’d already seen in previous videos, but this time introducing us to key characters and events that awaited us. With a rousing musical score and a final release date reveal at the very end, Nintendo delivered a trailer for the ages that would set the tone for the rest of the Switch’s impressive first year.
ANTHEM – OFFICIAL GAMEPLAY REVEAL E3 2017
As is tradition, E3 houses plenty of exciting new trailers and presentations to get the blood pumping for the year ahead. This year, nothing came close to exciting us as much as BioWare’s Anthem reveal. The official gameplay reveal introduced us to a whole new, massive open world full of highly detailed effects, plenty of deadly creatures and a storm that no one ever wants to get caught within. The highly impressive demo left a positive impression on what’s otherwise a forgettable year for BioWare and EA.
THE LAST OF US PART II – TEASER TRAILER #2
Every trailer on this list left a lasting impression in some form or another, but none left us emotionally drained and squeamish as much as the Paris Games Week teaser for The Last of Us Part II. Sony and Naughty Dog turned the violence up and the intrigue even higher in a surprising turn of events, with barely a hint as to what’s really going on or who’s involved. There’s a ton of theories out there over who might be involved in the scene, but there’s no doubting the impact this scene had on the intended audience.
WOLFENSTEIN 2 – LIESEL
Wolfenstein II had a rather impressive campaign leading up to its launch, but its live action teasers were some of the more enjoyable and absurd of the past year. In its alternate reality where the German Army ‘liberated’ the United States, a number of formerly familiar TV shows have been reinvented by Bethesda to show off what could have been. Whether it’s replacing Lassie with a Panzerhund named Liesel or everyone’s favorite game show German or Else, the creative team pulled out all the stops to deliver some very funny moments in-between all the action that the series is well known for.
INJUSTICE 2 – FIGHTER PACK 3 REVEAL
Injustice 2 continued the trend of creating complex and bold changes to the DC we know and love, with a story trailer that reintroduces us to an alternate universe of a deadly and deranged Superman and casts an even darker shadow with the voice over of one Brainiac. Which is exactly what this next entry in the list forgoes completely as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles surprised just about everyone in Netherrealms third fighter pack reveal trailer. Cue giddy excitement for all!
DEATH STRANDING – GAME AWARDS 2017 REVEAL
There’s nothing else like Death Stranding. We still don’t understand anything about it, but the anticipation surrounding any kind of news drop or teaser for Hideo Kojima’s next big thing is unquestionably huge. That was never more apparent than during the 2017 Game Awards where, after a year of very little information, Kojima and the Walking Dead star Norman Reedus introduced and confused us even further with a longer Death Stranding story teaser.
Like the previous two trailers, we were left with far more questions than answers (seriously, what’s with the baby in the throat thing?) but if there’s one thing Kojima knows how to do best, it’s to get people talking and questioning everything they think they know about the medium of interactive entertainment. There’s still no release date or concrete details over what Death Stranding will become, but hopefully the wait for answers won’t be too much longer. Either way, the trailer is impressive, crazy, and supposedly playable.
BEYOND GOOD & EVIL 2 – E3 2017 CINEMATIC PREMIERE
One game we weren’t expecting to hear anything about in 2017 was Beyond Good & Evil 2, but lo and behold, Ubisoft surprised everyone by not only revealing that the game still exists but that they have a new story trailer to show off too. And what a trailer it is. This isn’t the Beyond Good & Evil you might remember, with more language than anyone was anticipating, but the adventure is back in a big way and hopefully the action on show here will transfer perfectly to whenever the game reappears in playable form.
SUPER MARIO ODYSSEY – E3 2017 GAME TRAILER
Have you gotten the song out of your head yet? We knew Mario’s next adventure was going to be a big one, but no one anticipated capturing a frog by throwing a hat, running around as a realistic T-Rex, or dancing to one of the catchiest tunes of all time. But that’s exactly what happened at the end of Nintendo’s E3 presentation in this colorful trailer that turned general excitement for a new 3D Mario into something completely and utterly nuts. Jump up, superstar indeed.
RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2 – OFFICIAL TRAILER #2
Red Dead Redemption 2 may have been delayed a few months, but the newest trailer certainly kept the game in the public eye and made us ponder what Rockstar have up their sleeve. With plenty of high quality visuals, awesome action sequences and plenty of intrigue, Red Dead’s first official story trailer sent social media into a frenzy and for good reason. There’s so many questions it created in the process, something Rockstar is good at, but there’s no doubt it’s one of the most beautiful and most anticipated worlds we can’t wait to explore.
UNTITLED GOOSE GAME PRE-ALPHA GAMEPLAY
Bonus trailer time. Have a little fun with Untitled Goose Game, which is just as cute and funny as it sounds.
