No Man’s Sky: How to Upgrade Your Multi-Tool to Collect Better Resources

Multi-tool Upgrades – No Man’s Sky

Throughout No Man’s Sky the piece of gear you’ll find yourself using the most is your Multi-tool. This is your mining tool, your weapon, and your excavator all wrapped up in one shiny, metal package. As you progress through the game you’ll want to upgrade it in order to boost its mining power and speed so you can collect resources much more efficiently.

To do this, you’ll need to install technology onto the Multi-tool using the blueprints and resources you collect during your travels. Unlike those for your Exosuit and Starship, blueprints for your weapon are very common. You can obtain these in a number of ways:

  • Inside Shelters and Bases you’ll find consoles on the wall that provide a Multi-tool blueprint in exchange for 20 Carbon
  • Cargo drops usually have a dropped pod along with them. These can be found randomly during your travels. If you want to see if there’s one in your area, click the left thumbstick and look for the blue and white gear icon. That will lead you to the blueprint. While these can also be for Exosuits and Starships, they’re more often than not for your Multi-tool.
  • Aliens will sometimes reward you with a blueprint for responding to their requests correctly.
  • You’ll obtain a few during main quests if they are needed.

Once you have the recipe and resources needed to craft an upgrade, simply head to an empty slot on your Multi-tool, press X to install technology, and craft the one you want.
